An even encounter finished all-square on the return to the Liberty Stadium of Brendan Rodgers and Joe Allen with the visitors unable to capitalise on chances in the first half

By Joe Doyle

  • Gerhard Tremmel

    Gerhard Tremmel

Made a couple of good stops, the first to deny Johnson. Could do nothing about Sterling's volley that crashed off the bar. A simple catch from a Gerrard effort.

  • Chico

    3.00

    Chico

Recovered from a knock to the ankle, but played a few risky passes that put Williams under some unnecessary pressure. Mostly did well when he faced Suarez.

  • Ashley Williams

    Ashley Williams

Mostly dealt well with Suarez, but the Uruguayan got the better of him occasionally. Saw a header cleared off the line, though it looked to be veering wide.

  • Ángel Rangel

    3.00

    Ángel Rangel

Presented Sterling with a great opportunity after his misplaced clearance in the first 10 minutes, but saw the shot saved. Had a couple of chances to get forward, but was mostly pegged back with either Downing or Enrique attacking.

  • Ben Davies

    2.50

    Ben Davies

Was a little slow to close down Johnson early on before a decent cross. Had a big problem when Suarez and Sterling broke late on, but stayed calm and perhaps got a bit lucky when the latter put too much on his pass.

  • Leon Britton
    10
    6
    3.00

    Leon Britton

Made some good interceptions, in particular from Gerrard's silly back heel. A solid performance as ever, kept it simple with a typically high pass completion rate.

  • Michu
    11
    4
    3.50

    Michu

Struggled to get on the ball in the opening half, but wasn't shy of a shot when he did, though most were blocked. Was a lot more dangerous in the second period, as he advanced into the striker's role but saw a penalty shout turned down.

  • Pablo Hernández

Pablo Hernández Top of the Match

Worked the ball out from under his feet and curled a shot towards the far corner that just didn't bend enough. Wriggled away from Johnson before firing over. Found Michu well with a cross, and was a problem for the Reds to deal with when on the ball. Had a dangerous free kick tipped wide by Reina.

  • Wayne Routledge
    5

    3.00

    Wayne Routledge

Got a good shot in early that was palmed wide by Reina. Put in a decent ball that Shechter couldn't get a touch on. Looked lively but couldn't carry over his form from the first half into the second and was subbed.

  • Jonathan De Guzmán
    5
    7
    2.00

    Jonathan De Guzmán

Completely fluffed a great opening for the team. Should have passed when in a four-on-two situation, but shanked a shot miles wide. Was replaced late in the game after an ineffective second half.

  • Itay Shechter

    12

Itay Shechter Flop of the Match

Just couldn't get on the end of a Routledge through ball. Didn't get enough service from the midfield, but equally didn't really show signs that he can permanently oust Danny Graham from a starting role.

Substitutions

  • Nathan Dyer

    Nathan Dyer

Came on for Routledge and almost immediately saw a volley blocked. Got into a collision with Reina after a Downing mistake.

  • Sung-Yong Ki

    2.50

    Sung-Yong Ki

Came on at half-time, and slotted nicely into the centre of midfield. Made a very sloppy clearance that almost led to a goal though. Earned a free kick in a dangerous position.

  • Kemy Agustien
    3
    4

    Kemy Agustien

A late arrival on the pitch, and did not have time to make an impact.

  • José Reina Paez
    29
    5
    3.50

    José Reina Paez

Made a good stop early on from Routledge. Was brave in the second half and took a boot to the face for his troubles, but recovered. Made a good save from Hernandez's late free kick.

  • Glen Johnson
    30
    2
    4.00

    Glen Johnson

A very impressive performance. Put in a great ball that Enrique couldn't direct on target. Showed great feet on more than one occasion, and would have opened the scoring but for a good save from Tremmel.

  • José Enrique
    28
    4
    3.50

    José Enrique

Looked dangerous cutting in off the wing, but was guilty of taking one too many touches on occasion. Couldn't get a solid contact on a good cross from Johnson. Linked well with Suarez. Made a good block on Michu 10 minutes before the end.

  • Daniel Agger
    21
    2
    3.00

    Daniel Agger

Dealt well with Shechter, but was troubled more by Michu in the second half. Survived a very soft penalty shout as he would have expected to.

  • Martin Skrtel
    21
    3
    3.00

    Martin Skrtel

Made some good blocks on Michu's shots in the opening 45 minutes, but was largely untroubled throughout with Agger man-marking the Spaniard.

  • Steven Gerrard
    13
    19
    1.50

    Steven Gerrard

Attempted a silly back heel that almost led to an opener for Swansea. A sloppy first 45, with some misplaced passes. Had a curled effort in the second half but it was simple for Tremmel. Made one fine pass for Johnson, but nothing came from it.

  • Jordan Henderson
    12
    15
    2.00

    Jordan Henderson

His first start of the Premier League season and alongside Allen was likely to be under close scrutiny, but started well. Was a little anonymous though, and replaced late in the game.

  • Stewart Downing
    10
    17
    2.00

    Stewart Downing

Surprisingly switched to left-back by Rodgers, and made a decent start. A bad mistake let Dyer in late on and led to the collision between the winger and Reina, and he was subbed moments later.

  • Raheem Sterling
    18
    8
    3.00

    Raheem Sterling

Had an opportunity early on that he should have done better with. Hit a brilliant effort on the volley that struck the crossbar. Less influential in the second half. Overhit a vital pass to Suarez on the break that could have opened the scoring.

  • Joe Allen
    19
    5
    3.00

    Joe Allen

Was always going to be a difficult trip for the 22-year-old, but he did well mostly. Crisp passing was marred slightly by a couple more fouls than he needed to make, but a good performance.

  • Luis Suárez
    29
    5
    3.50

    Luis Suárez

Was his usual lively self around the box, playing a fine ball for Enrique but he was just offside. Looked a cut above the rest, but as is sometimes the case, was lacking a finish to match his super work-rate.

Substitutions

  • Joe Cole
    7
    9
    2.50

    Joe Cole

Joined the match late in the second half, and didn't get too many opportunities to impress, but made a couple of good runs off the ball and put in a decent cross.

  • Jonjo Shelvey
    17
    5
    3.00

    Jonjo Shelvey

Replaced the ineffective Henderson, but had little time on the ball. Nonetheless, forced a good stop from Tremmel in his short time on the pitch.
