Player Ratings: Everton 1-1 Norwich City

The hosts dominated for most of the match, but a lapse of concentration at the end saw Sebastien Bassong head in a very late equaliser for the Canaries

The American keeper was rarely bothered in the opening 45 minutes, with Norwich failing to give him a shot worth getting flustered about. His first forced save came in the 57th minute, but when the keeper needed to step up the most he could not, as Bassong's header went past him.

  • Leighton Baines

The left-back seemed to play a little deeper than usual, but did put in the occasional threatening ball to give the Everton attackers chance to score and had one great chance on goal following a majestic run into the box, but Ruddy stopped his effort with a confident save.

  • John Heitinga

    John Heitinga

The Dutchman dealt with Norwich’s aerial treats with ease and never really allowed the visitors to penetrate the hosts' back-line, except when Bassong was left unmarked to head in a Norwich equaliser at the death.

    Phil Jagielka

Playing out on the right, the Everton captain put in a dominant performance to keep the Norwich attackers at bay, as well as making fine clearances in the rare occasion of a Canaries’ offensive move.

    Bryan Oviedo

Making his first league start for the Toffees, the attacker was one of the quieter of the Everton players up top, although that may have been predominately down to the ball being played down his opposite side for most of the match. However, he enjoyed some positive moments linking up with Baines on the left-side, despite looking a little lost at times.

  • Sylvain Distin

    Sylvain Distin

Just like his defensive partner Heitinga, Distin was strong in the challenge and cleared the ball efficiently whenever Norwich mounted an offensive move. Like Heitinga, the Frenchman did not pick up Bassong who was not pressured and was able to head in a late equaliser for the Canaries.

  • Thomas Hitzlsperger

    Thomas Hitzlsperger

As the anchorman in the heart of midfield, Everton’s latest recruit did a solid job and was always looking to play the ball forward.

  • Leon Osman

    Leon Osman

At the hub of the Everton midfield, Osman consistently picked out pass after pass to those in front to feed the likes of Jelavic and Naismith. The midfielder was not short of shots himself and almost added to the Toffees’ tally on two early occasions, but a little more finesse was required of his shooting abilities to make them count.

  • Steven Pienaar

    Steven Pienaar

The South African picked up a knock in the opening 15 minutes, and although he looked able to run it off, the attacker did not appear to be at his sharpest. Despite this, he still managed to help Everton in the final third and Jelavic in the middle.

    Nikica Jelavic

The Croatian worked tenaciously from the start and battled tremendously on the by-line to set Naismith up in the middle of the Norwich area and put the hosts in the lead.

  • Steven Naismith

Steven Naismith Top of the Match

A very active member of the home side and struck brilliantly to put Everton ahead in the first 15 minutes and took full advantage of Jelavic’s hard work to get the ball into the Scotsman’s feet. Held up the ball well throughout the match and offered chances to the rest of the Everton attackers during a very lively performance.

    Apostolos Vellios

Everton's only sub came on after the Norwich equaliser and did not have time to make a telling impact on the result.

  • John Ruddy

    John Ruddy

The keeper had no chance against Naismith’s blasted opener, but looked relatively confident during the game and made some good stops, especially when Baines ran brilliantly into the box to test the former Toffees stopper.

The full-back was pitted against the quieter of the Everton players, Oviedo, and so was not given too much to do, but was occasionally threatened by Pienaar and Jelavic who were able to give the right-back a hard time. The defender did make a couple of good attacking contributions from crosses.

  • S. Bassong

    S. Bassong

Did not have the easiest task of marking Jelavic and watching the runs of Naismith. However, the centre-back made his fair share of interventions and timely tackles. Made the most effective contribution to Norwich’s game, in the 90th minute with his headed equaliser.

  • Javier Garrido

    3.00

    Javier Garrido

Had a hard time defending against a very active Naismith and often failed to track the Scotsman’s threatening runs and dives into the box. The full-back’s passing was also sloppy at times and put his side on the back-foot. However, the defender’s cross on the 90th minute was a vital contribution, setting up Bassong for the Canaries’ equaliser.

Had a hard time tracking Jelavic and did not keep with him when the Croatian set up Naismith for the opener.

Bradley Johnson Flop of the Match

Holding in the centre of midfield, Johnson was going up against the thoroughly efficient Hitzlsperger and allowed the Everton man to dominate play in the middle all too often. A booking for a miserably mistimed challenge summed up his afternoon.

  • Robert Snodgrass

    Robert Snodgrass

The former Leeds United man played attentively, but did not gel particularly well with Holt to create cohesive attacks on Everton’s defence.

  • Anthony Pilkington

    Anthony Pilkington

Jagielka often did more than enough to put the winger’s threats to bed and Pilkington really struggled to offer Norwich attacking options.

  • Wesley Hoolahan

    Wesley Hoolahan

Not the most inspiring performance from the winger, who failed to offer Snodgrass and Holt options up top. Was replaced by Howson in the last 20 minutes.

  • Alexander Tettey

    Alexander Tettey

Apart from halting Everton’s attacks on the odd occasion, the central midfielder did not do enough to get the ball forward to the likes of Snodgrass and Holt ahead of him. Was booked in the final moments of the game.

  • Grant Holt

    Grant Holt

The striker was rarely given a chance at goal all game, with just one clear opportunity coming in the first half, as he skied one over Howard’s net when in good space. Had a half-chance in the second half, but the American did enough to stop the attacker’s one-on-one run.
