Second-half goals from Fletcher and Cuellar preceded Sessegnon's stunning 25-yard winner in a game that was turned by a debatable Hangeland red card

  • Mark Schwarzer

    Mark Schwarzer

Had a quiet first half but had to pick the ball out of his net after superb finishes from Fletcher and Cuellar. Did throw his creaking body through the air to deny Johnson with a fine full-stretched tip around the post. Was beaten a third time by a rocket from Sessegnon.

  • John Arne Riise

    John Arne Riise

Was measured in his build-up play and much less of a liability than in recent weeks when defending. Hugely unlucky to see his deflected shot loop over Mignolet and back off the bar.

  • Brede Hangeland

Brede Hangeland Flop of the Match

Started well, lunging into challenges and beating Fletcher and Sessegnon to the ball before he was left short by Karagounis' underhit backpass. The Norwegian probably didn't intend to hurt Cattermole, but his over-zealous two-footed lunge was enough to have Lee Probert flash a red card.

  • Aaron Hughes

    Aaron Hughes

Won what he needed to do in the air and wasn't in as poor form as the scoreline would suggest. Did what he could to stem the tide but Sunderland took their goals well.

  • Sascha Riether

    Sascha Riether

Industrious performance on the right and had a great battle with Johnson. Rarely troubled, though this was one of his weaker games for Fulham in what has been an impressive start to his life in west London.

  • Steve Sidwell

    Steve Sidwell

Got forward on a number of occasions but wasn't on the same wavelength as Berbatov in the box when the Bulgarian was looking for a one-two. Sat deeper after Hangeland's sending off but was beaten in the air by Cuellar for Sunderland's second. Was booked for a late tackle on Cattermole and frequently saw his final ball end promising Fulham moves. Had a great chance to score Fulham's second but took an age to control the ball before being smothered by Mignolet.

  • Giorgos Karagounis

    3.00

    Giorgos Karagounis

Began the game well in the middle of the pitch, showing for the ball and making his fair share of tackles. Left his pass too short, indirectly leading to Hangeland's sending off before being replaced by younger legs.

  • Damien Duff
    4
    2
    3.00

    Damien Duff

Delivered a couple of testing crosses in an industrious first half and kept Rose pegged back before latching onto Rodallega's wayward shot to cross for Petric for the equaliser.

  • Alexander Kacaniklic

    Alexander Kacaniklic

Was replaced by Rodallega after picking up an injury before the half-hour mark after what had been a promising opening from the Swede.

  • Dimitar Berbatov

    3.00

    Dimitar Berbatov

Had Fulham's best chance of the first half but could only sidefoot at Mignolet. Later latched onto an incisive pass but fired wide of the far past. Dropped into midfield for the second half but was a picture of frustration as the footballers around him failed to reach his own high standards. Got into a scuffle with Cattermole late on. Not his best day.

  • Bryan Ruiz

    2.50

    Bryan Ruiz

Started well in behind Berbatov but found the going far tougher once his side were down to ten men. Didn't have the space he usually likes and though he moved it well, injury would then force a change for Fulham as he went off.

Substitutions

    Philippe Senderos

Came on for Karagounis to make up for Hangeland's absence and slotted in well in the middle of the defence. Was part of a backline that shipped three second half goals though.

  • Mladen Petric

    3.50

    Mladen Petric

Came on for Ruiz but fluffed his lines as he blasted his shot over with his first touch but made amends moments later as he turned in Duff's cross to equalise. Could perhaps have done better with a one-on-one later but Mignolet reacted well to save. Made an impact.

  • Hugo Rodallega

    2.50

    Hugo Rodallega

Replaced the injured Kacaniklic to slot in on the left. Was fairly anonymous until his header from Schwarzer's goal kick released Petric who could only fire over. Was the source of much of Berbatov's frustration throughout his time on the pitch.

  • Simon Mignolet
    12

    4.00

    Simon Mignolet

Had to make one save from Berbatov before he watched Riise's deflected drive sail over him and back off the bar. Could do little about Petric's goal which was powerfully diverted past him from six yards. Made a great one-on-one save from Sidwell before repeating the feat with seven minutes to go, saving from Petric.

  • Phil Bardsley

    Phil Bardsley

Solid right-back who came back into the side and kept things simple. Kacaniklic looked set to give him a difficult afternoon until he went off injured.

  • Danny Rose

    Danny Rose

Has had his critics and although Duff caused him early problems, he grew into the contest and formed a good understanding with Johnson on the left. One of his better games.

  • John O'Shea

    2.50

    John O'Shea

Did well up against Berbatov for the most part but the defending on the whole for Petric's goal left a lot to be desired. Was booked for a trip on Rodallega as the game reached the latter stages.Too easily beaten by Petric one-on-one in the latter stages and was lucky to have Mignolet in fine form behind him.

  • Carlos Javier Cuéllar

    Carlos Javier Cuéllar

His marking was loose for Fulham's equaliser but he rose well to nod his header to the back post and past Schwarzer to give his team the lead again.

  • Lee Cattermole
    3
    1
    3.50

    Lee Cattermole

Was sharp to scamper onto Karagounis' underhit pass and to his credit went down without screaming in pain, despite the power behind Hangeland's lunge. Otherwise returned to what he is good at as he added energy and composure to the midfield. Involved in a late fracas with Berbatov that saw the Sunderland man booked.

  • Sebastian Larsson

    3.00

    Sebastian Larsson

Played off the right but in a more reserved wide role. Didn't charge forward with abandon but played one pass in particular that Sessegnon should have done better with. Replaced by McClean.

  • Jack Colback

    Jack Colback

Worked hard and well alongside Cattermole in the middle. Chased and harried and was composed in possession before being replaced by Vaughan.

  • Adam Johnson

Adam Johnson Top of the Match

Had a quiet game until he delivered one of the passes of the season for Fletcher to finish. Needs to be a more prominent figure for the Black Cats because he has enormous quality. Showed it again as he delivered a pinpoint corner for Cuellar's goal moments after drawing a great save from Schwarzer with a 20-yard curler. Made a telling impact.

  • Stéphane Sessegnon

    Stéphane Sessegnon

Found some good positions but was either smothered early or too liable to make an incorrect decision in the final third. Wasted a great chance when in the box to set up Fletcher but made amends in the second half with a stunning 25-yard strike into the far corner for Sunderland's third goal.

  • Steven Fletcher

    Steven Fletcher

Didn't get much of a sniff in the first half but when he received his first incisive pass of the game from Johnson he made no mistake with an expert finish past Schwarzer. Saw another strike cancelled out for offside after a great counterattack.

Substitutions

    Late sub for Colback.

  • James McClean

Came on for Larsson with 20 to play and kept things simple from the right in a cautious final stage of the game.
