Player Ratings: Southampton 1-1 Swansea

After a defensive mistake, for which Maya Yoshida and Paulo Gazzaniga will both take partial blame for, Saints surrendered three points in a good contest at St Mary's Stadium

Paulo Gazzaniga Flop of the Match

Flapped at some high balls and had one nervy moment when gathering the ball in his own box. Saved well from Ki, though. Poor pass out to Yoshida led to the Swans' goal.

  • Nathaniel Clyne

    Nathaniel Clyne

Made a brilliant tackle to stop Routledge getting through early on and generally dealt with him well. Got forward too, as always.

  • Maya Yoshida

    Maya Yoshida

Comfortable display but was not truly tested with Michu failing to threaten up front for the Swans. Started the move for Schneiderlin's goal with a direct ball to Lambert. Dwelled on the ball allowing Dyer in for the equaliser, though his keeper did not help him. Slightly made up for it with a fantastic block late on.

  • Jose Rocha Fonte

    Jose Rocha Fonte

Unlucky not to open scoring but a slightly poor touch meant the opposing defender got back to block his shot after Ramirez's free kick. Did well at the back, but was rarely tested.

  • Luke Shaw

    3.50

    Luke Shaw

Accomplished on the ball when getting forward, despite being the youngest ever Saints player to start in the Premier League at 17. Tackled back on Hernandez well also.

  • Morgan Schneiderlin

    Morgan Schneiderlin

Smashed over with good early chance and played some wasteful passes. However worked hard and had his persistence rewarded when scoring the opener after Lambert's flick on.

  • Jack Cork

    Jack Cork

Offered more protection to the back four than Davis and Schneiderlin have in previous games.

  • G. Ramírez

    G. Ramírez Top of the Match

Was very lively indeed in the first half. Curled a superb effort just wide, and a couple of other shots narrowly off target. Was more direct with his running but still made some poor decisions. Free kick nearly set up Fonte.

  • Adam Lallana
    3
    2
    3.50

    Adam Lallana

Denied by a fine save early on and was involved in most of Saints' positive moves. Not quite as influential as he has been though. Booked for diving.

  • Jason Puncheon

    Jason Puncheon

Got into some good positions early on, created a good chance for Schneiderlin. Got a bit lost in the tie later on though.

  • Rickie Lambert
    1
    2

    Rickie Lambert

Nice knock down for Lallana, found space and won headers but never tested Hemmell himself. Assisted the opener with one of many flicked headers. Nodded narrowly wide just after Swansea's goal.

    Gerhard Tremmel

Fine save to deny Lallana in the first half, in which he was a fairly busy man.

  • Ashley Williams

    Ashley Williams

Booked for clumsy foul on Ramirez and could not get near Lambert in the air.

  • Ángel Rangel

    Ángel Rangel

Delivery was not the best at times when charging forward, beaten by Ramirez and Lallana often. Vital block on Lallana in the second half.

  • Ben Davies

    Ben Davies

Got forward when he could to decent effect, but was largely dominated and pinned back by Clyne.

  • Leon Britton

    Leon Britton

Made lots of passes and kept Swansea ticking deep in midfield.

  • Michu

    Michu

Did not see enough of the ball to have any real influence but maybe could have enforced himself into the clash more.

  • Pablo Hernández

    Pablo Hernández

Created one good opening after cutting in but hesitated when reached box, did not do enough in the final third.

  • Wayne Routledge

    Wayne Routledge

Looked threatening early on when running in behind, but quietened down as the game went on.

  • Jonathan De Guzmán

    Jonathan De Guzmán

Some sloppy play just outside his own box gave Ramirez a good chance, failed to create enough for his own side.

  • Sung-Yong Ki

    Sung-Yong Ki

Forced a very good save from Gazzaniga after quick thinking to pick up a short corner. Goal-saving tackle to deny Lambert after the break.

    Nathan Dyer

The former Southampton man replaced Routledge not long after the break, and was met with boos from the home crowd. But soon quietened the taunts with the equalising goal.
