Player Ratings: Borussia Dortmund 5-2 Bayern Munich

Goal.com assesses the individuals on hand as BVB hammered the Bavarians to claim the 2011-12 DFB-Pokal title, and with it their first-ever domestic double

    Roman Weidenfeller

Made a brave one-on-one save from Gomez early on, and took a hefty blow in the process that led to his substitution on 34 minutes. Clearly affected by his injury, he made an uncharacteristic error in judgment and conceded the penalty that led to Robben's equaliser.

  • Mats Hummels

    Mats Hummels

Played Gomez onside before the penalty, but later atoned for his mix-up as he saved Lahm's shot with a block on the goal-line. Converted a penalty, and largely kept Gomez quiet when the Bayern man was in his area.

  • Marcel Schmelzer

    Marcel Schmelzer

As usual, he played a more subdued role than Piszczek. But Schmelzer's purpose was to neutralise Robben - which he did for the majority of the match.

  • Neven Subotic

    Neven Subotic

Was too far from Hummels before the penalty. Nearly cost his team a second goal as his clearance was blocked. After a disappointing first half, however, the Serbian was excellent: he spared Langerak's blushes with a brilliant tackle, and seemed to always anticipate danger when it came his way.

  • Lukasz Piszczek

    3.50

    Lukasz Piszczek

Another excellent performance from the Poland international, who is fast approaching world-class status. Kept Ribery under wraps for long spells, forcing the winger to shift to the right. And in attack, Piszczek was always willing to make runs up the flank.

  • Ilkay Gündogan
    61

    3.50

    Ilkay Gündogan

Did not have the same dominance of the midfield that he has in recent weeks. However, he reverted to his playmaking roots as he delivered some clever passes in the final third.

  • Jakub Blaszczykowski

    3.50

    Jakub Blaszczykowski

His quickness to the ball again and again created chances for Dortmund. He pounced on Gustavo's error and wisely slid the ball to Kagawa for the opener, then again took advantage of a deflection as he won a penalty.

  • Kevin Großkreutz

    Kevin Großkreutz

As usual against Bayern, the winger spent most of his time defending against Robben. However, this time his passing in the attacking third proved decisive: it was his pinpoint ball that assisted Lewandowski's second.

  • Sebastian Kehl

    Sebastian Kehl

Did not have many touches, and was not particularly quick to the ball. But the captain led his team and positioned himself well.

  • Robert Lewandowski

Robert Lewandowski Top of the Match

Had limited chances, but worked hard as always and made his moments count. Played a role in the opener, then masterminded BVB's third goal as he cleverly flicked his header to Kagawa before receiving a return pass and finishing past Neuer. Got his second with a strong finish, and his hat-trick late in the game to put the icing on the cake.

  • Shinji Kagawa

    Shinji Kagawa

In what might have been his last game as a Dortmund player, the Japan international scored the opener, and played a brilliant pass to assist Lewandowski. Always dangerous on the counterattack, his performance could be the perfect farewell.

Substitutions

  • Mitchell Langerak

    Mitchell Langerak

Senselessly came off his line and left the goal wide open for Robben and Gomez, but was bailed out by Subotic. Had he been put under more pressure, he might have had a real shocker.

  • Ivan Perisic

    Ivan Perisic

Made a brief run-out as Kuba was given a break.

  • Sven Bender

    Sven Bender

Came on as a late substitute to shore up the BVB midfield.

  • Manuel Neuer
    20

    2.50

    Manuel Neuer

Was close to saving Dortmund's second and third goals, but could not quite keep the ball out. Was not at his sharpest, both in shot-stopping and defending from crosses: this was made crystal clear as he let go of the ball which led to Lewandowski's third.

  • Holger Badstuber
    17
    54
    2.00

    Holger Badstuber

With Bayern's midfield struggling to keep the game organised, the centre-back's lack of mobility was exposed. He can play very well, but only when there is more structure to a game.

  • Jerome Boateng
    15
    67
    1.50

    Jerome Boateng

Out-muscled by Lewandowski time and again, and in a moment of madness, he conceded a penalty to Kuba. A poor game from a player who can do so much more.

  • Philipp Lahm
    43
    34
    2.50

    Philipp Lahm

Started the match brilliantly as he made some excellent overlapping runs up the right flank. Had a great chance to score, but saw his shot cleared off the line by Hummels.

  • Arjen Robben
    25
    53
    3.00

    Arjen Robben

Is known for being more of a selfish player, but his most significant moments from free play were through-passes, a few of which he played very well. Exorcised his demons from April as he converted a penalty, but struggled overall.

  • Bastian Schweinsteiger
    19
    59
    2.00

    Bastian Schweinsteiger

Played a brilliant pass to Gomez before the penalty, but could not keep the game slow in midfield. Was very frustrated, and his anger grew as the game wore on, and could have been sent off.

  • D. Alaba
    21
    50
    2.00

    D. Alaba

Has been a resounding success overall at left-back, but tonight was not his night. Showed uncommonly underwhelming technique, and simply lacked the sharpness that has made him such a key figure in this Bayern team.

  • Franck Ribéry
    55
    40
    1.50

    Franck Ribéry

Started the game brightly in isolated instances, and set up Lahm for what looked a certain goal. However, the Frenchman was quiet in long spells as he was doubly marked. He showed his class late as he scored a brilliant goal, but it ultimately was not enough.

  • Luiz Gustavo Dias
    19
    66
    2.00

Luiz Gustavo Dias Flop of the Match

Guilty of setting the table for Kuba to assist the opener, and played Lewandowski onside for Dortmund's third. Replaced at half-time as Heynckes needed more in attack.

  • Toni Kroos
    19
    40
    2.50

    Toni Kroos

Struggled in an attacking position during the first half as Bayern were stifled in the final third. Moved to a defensive role after the break, but the flow of play did not suit his strengths.

  • Mario Gomez
    19
    59
    2.00

    Mario Gomez

Had a chance to equalise early, but was denied by Weidenfeller. Persisted, and won the penalty that Robben converted to level terms at 1-1. Very unlucky not to score from a header that clanged the woodwork - his scoring drought against BVB continues.

Substitutions

  • Diego Contento
    17
    29
    2.50

    Diego Contento

Came on for Alaba, but his 21 minutes were played when the result was already decided. Had little chance to influence the game.

  • Thomas Müller
    21
    40
    2.00

    Thomas Müller

Replaced Luiz Gustavo for the second half, and his performance can be considered a flop overall. Had no presence in the penalty box, which is where he was most needed.
