Afghanistan showed gumption after going a goal down to Sri Lanka to come back and win 3-1 in their group A match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi.

Mi Mohamed Zain opened the scoring for the Lankans however two goals from Sanjar Ahmadi and a third by Ata Yamir Ali clinched the victory for the Afghan side.

Yousef Kargar’s side started with Bala Arezo and Sanjar Ahmadi upfront while Sri Lanka were crippled with Chathura Gunarathna missing out on a starting spot due to a bout of flu.

In the fourth minute from a Haroon Fakhruddin throw-in, Waheed Ahmad had a decent opening but his shot was blocked by the Sri Lankan defenders.

The very next minute saw Nadeeka Pushpakumara’s flag-kick being headed by Ruwanthilake which was punched over by Hameedullah Yousufzari.

The opening goal came in the 17th minute as Hameedullah Yousufzari came off his line to clear the danger but he completely missed Mi Mohamed Zain as he just went past the former and placed the ball in an empty net.

It took just five minutes for Afghanistan to restore parity as Haroon Fakruddin ran with the ball on the left and finds Arezo who squares the ball, just when the Sri Lankan defenders expected him to cross, for Sanjar Ahmadi whose first time shot found the back of the net.

Sri Lankans weren’t closing down the spaces for the Afghans and allowing them way too much space to operate. Yousef Mashriqi and Ata Yamir Ali ran the show from the middle of the park and even when they would lose the ball, their defenders wouldn’t allow the opposition too many touches on the ball.

Just after the half hour mark, Sanjar Ahmadi scored his second of the match. Mohammad Esrafil ran down the line and his ball across the face of the goal saw Arezo fail to reach but Ahmadi popped up in time to score.

They had another chance before the end of the half as Arezo does well to find Fakhruddin whose goes past a couple of shirts and unleashes a poor shot.

Jang Jung, out of desperation, had to throw in his star player, Chathura on the field hoping that he could influence the proceedings.

The Island nation were lucky not to have gone a man down after substitute Chameera Krishantha’s double footed tackle on Sanjar Ahmadi saw him earn only a yellow card.

Vijesiri twice blocked Ahmadi within seconds to keep his side in the match in the 60th minute as the Afghans looked to add more to the scoreline.

Arezo had a couple of chances after being played through by Yousef Mashriqi but the final product was missing. Waheed Ahmad missed a glorious chance after Arezo laid the ball for him but his feeble shot didn’t trouble the Sri Lankan custodian.

The third goal came in the 79th minute as Ata Yamir Ali, being left unmarked by the Sri Lankan defenders, rose to meet a Haroon Fakhrudin cornerkick.

Warakagoda and Vijesiri couldn’t seize the ball from the feet of Arezo and the onrushing goalkeeper too failed in his attempt as the Afghan number nine decided to place the ball towards the far post and missed by not much.

The scoreline remained the same and handed the Afghans important three points as Sri Lanka have a tough task of beating the Indians on the final matchday.
