Dempo Sports Club defeated Churchill Brothers SC 4-2 in an entertaining round 24 fixture of the I-League played at the Nehru Stadium, Goa, on Wednesday evening.

Clifford Miranda broke the deadlock in the 37th minute before Roberto Martins da Silva (Beto) scored the equaliser in the 43rd minute as the two teams ended up on level terms at half time.

The Brazilian then put Churchill Brothers in the lead for the first time in the match in the 46th minute which was soon cancelled by Ranti Martins (50') before Koko Sakibo gave Colaco's team the lead for the second time in the game in the 63rd minute.

Former Churchill player Rowilson Rodrigues doubled the lead in the 86th minute after former Dempo player Beto saw a second yellow card for handball in the 68th minute.

The home side started with Koko Sakibo and Ranti Martins in front, with Densil Theobald in the center, while Anthony Pereira and Clifford Miranda ran the right and left flanks respectively.

Carlos Parreira also had a foreign attacking pair of Henry Antchouet and Ndubuisi Opara with Beto controlling the midfield alongside Lenny Rodrigues and Lalrindika Ralte.

The opening exchanges of play between the two sides were quite timid before Anthony Pereira put down a golden opportunity to score off Ranti Martins pass in the 10th minute when the Dempo midfielder sent a feeble attempt into the hands of Churchill keeper Arindam Bhattacharya.

There were more chances put down by Dempo through Sakibo in the following minutes before Beto sent a shot into orbit, but it was Clifford Miranda who found the breakthrough in the 37th minute.

Koko Sakibo and Ranti Martins interplayed between themselves before the latter released Miranda on the left who squeezed the ball past Bhattacharya at the near-post.

However, two minutes before half time, Beto found the back of the net after he scrambled home a cross into the box by Steven Dias.

Almost immediately, in the second half, Beto struck again when he managed to sneak the ball through the legs of Dempo goalkeeper Subashish Roychowdhury after Churchill striker Antchouet wasn't able to get a shot on target from inside the box.

Dempo replied back through Ranti Martins, who scored his 27th goal of the season, with an unstoppable pile-driver from outside the box to bring the match back on level terms in the 50th minute.

Koko Sakibo made amends for his earlier misses in the 63rd minute, regaining the advantage for his side, leaving Churchill goalie Bhattacharya with no chance as the Nigerian striker blasted home after receiving a pass from Anthony Pereira.

That was followed by setback for Churchill in the 68th minute after Beto received his second yellow card, after having already being booked in the first half, as he tried to guide the ball in across the line with his hand in front of Dempo's goalmouth.

Sakibo continued to misfire infront of goal before Dempo substitute Rowilson Rodrigues rose to the occasion to double his side's lead off an Anthony Pereira flag kick in the 86th minute.

Dempo should have scored a fifth goal but substitute Joaquim Abranches, instead of shooting from the left, chose to find Martins on the right, but his pass was too heavy for the Nigerian to latch on to.

As a result of this win, Dempo extend their lead at the top of the table by seven points, having accumulated 50 points from 23 games while Churchill's title hopes are in tatters as they remain in fifth position with 41 points from as many matches.
