Two goals by Beto helped Churchill Brothers demolish Prayag United 5-2 in an I-League encounter at the Nehru Stadium, Fatorda on Sunday.
Beto sent the Goan side on their way with the first two goals before a Sukhen Dey own goal increased the away side’s misery. Henri Antchouet and Lalrindika Ralte scored the other two goals for the hosts while Yusif Yakubu and Josimar Martins reduced the margin for the visitors.
Churchill Brothers took control of the match from the kick-off and had a couple of chances to go ahead which were spurned. They finally did manage to find the back of the net, when Beto nodded in a cross from Denzil Franco in the 21st minute.
The Brazilian added to his tally when after Lenny Rodrigues and Henri instigated a quick counter-attack and found Beto, who slotted the ball home with a left footed grounder from the edge of the box.
Yakubu then halved the deficit for the away side with a smart goal in the 43rd minute but Sukhen Dey’s own goal shut the doors on a potential comeback.
In the second half, Henri finally made one of the chances that fell his way count, as he got to the end of a cross by Steven Dias and pushed the ball past Abhijit Mondal in goal.
Lalrindika Ralte made it 5-1 when his left footer found the top corner of the net.
Prayag scored another consolation goal in the 80th minute when Australian defender Antun Kovacic and goalkeeper Arindam Bhattacharya were involved in a horrendous mix-up which allowed Josimar to score a goal.
The win sees Churchill Brothers go above Prayag United with 38 points, as well as having a game in hand compared to their rivals.
