Dempo SC defeated HAL Bangalore 3-0 in a round 21 match of the I-League played at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, Goa, on Saturday evening.
Ranti Martins completed his brace in the match while Yusuke Kato scored his first goal in the I-League after coming on as a substitute.
Dempo's Martins wasted two chances before the Nigerian finally got down with his act in the 16th minute from the penalty spot after Peter Carvalho was brought down in the HAL area.
Although they held a one-goal lead, the Goans continued to miss their opportunities as Koko Sakibo, Carvalho and Anthony Pereira proved to be the guilty parties. They headed for the break with the score reading 1-0.
The story wasn't different in the second session of play, as Dempo's Joaquim Abranches, Densill Theobad and Climax Lawrence all looked like they left their scoring boots back home.
In the 61st minute, Sakibo was quick to intercept a pass in the center of the park before releasing Martins who cleverly flicked the ball over onrushing HAL goalkeeper Amar Deb.
Dempo's Japanese striker Yusuke Kato then made it 3-0 in the 89th minute after Sakibo yet again played the role of the provider.
Although the scoreline read 3-0 against the Bangalore unit, HAL keeper Deb was influential on a couple of occasions to keep his side from conceding more.
The win saw the former champions and league leaders Dempo creating a breathing space with 46 points, although their nearest rivals Mohun Bagan (37) have a match in hand.
HAL, on the other hand, are almost certain for the drop from the top tier, so far being able to pick only seven points from their 21 matches.
