Chirag Kerala were defeated by Mohun Bagan in the I-League at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi. Two goals scored by Odafa Okolie from the penalty spot in the 35th minute and the 84th minute and a late strike from Jose Ramirez Barreto in the 86th minute sealed the issue for the Mariners who had initially conceded an equalizer after Anil Kumar scored in the 47th minute.
The Mariners were without influential duo Sunil Chhetri and Syed Rahim Nabi while Chirag looked to bounce back from their disappointing defeat against the bottom placed HAL side in the last round of the I-league.
Nizam Packeer Ali's side started the more positive of the two teams on display, as the attacking pair of Anil Kumar and David Sunday created problems for the shaky defense of the away side. Although they had the upper hand for almost half an hour, they could not translate the advantage to goals.
Against the run of play, Odafa Okolie gave the Mariners the lead from the penalty spot in the 35th minute as a Chirag defender had handled a cross.
The half time team talk did wonders for the home side as immediately after the restart, Chirag equalised through the lively Anil Kumar where he calmly slotted past the Bagan custodian after Asif’s lofted ball had found him clean through.
It was the home team that were buoyed by the equaliser as they upped the tempo and they did create some chances upfront but failed to break the deadlock.
Unluckily, it was another penalty from a similar situation which allowed Subrata Bhattacharya’s side to take the lead again. Jimshad had handled the ball in the 6 yard box and was sent off. Odafa made no mistake converting the spot kick.
Jose Ramirez Barreto too joined in the party when he killed off the game by scoring his first and Mohun Bagan’s third in the 86th minute.
On the day that saw East Bengal lose dramatically and Dempo too only earning a draw in the Goan derby, the result allows the title challengers to close the gap as they are now just four points behind Dempo.
