Prayag United edged past East Bengal by a solitary goal in a round 18 match of the I-League played at the Salt Lake stadium, Kolkata, on Tuesday.

In one of the best counterattacking moves, Kayne Vincent scored the winner in the very last move of the match after the East Bengal custodian failed to track back in time following his decision to be a part of the cornerkick at the opposite end.

The match started with East Bengal having Edmilson Marques on the bench with Tolgay Ozbey operating as the lone striker.

A depleted Prayag United side fielded Kayne Vincent and Josimar da Silva Martins upfront given that Yusif Yakubu hadn't yet arrived back from Ghana.

Chances were hard to come by as it seemed that the two teams had forgotten their creativity back home. The earlier exchanges saw a couple of off target shots by the two teams.

Josimar saw his header go over the bar while Ozbey was denied by goalkeeper Abhijit Mondal to not get to the end of a searching ball by Khanthang Paite.

East Bengal almost found the target in the 30th minute but Mondal averted the danger with an acrobatic save to deny Ozbey’s header from a Paite cross.

A few minutes later, Ozbey unleashed a fierce attempt on goal after going by past a couple of purple shirts but to the relief of Mondal, it went wide.

After the break, the first chance befell the red and gold as Sanju Pradhan’s through-ball saw Penn Orji send the ball straight into the hands of Mondal.

East Bengal survived a scare when Justine Stephen saw his header from a James Singh corner-kick almost find the back of the net around the 65th minute.

The two teams were anxious to score a goal and it wasn’t until some late action in the match that eventually saw the winner coming through.

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu joined the attack for a Mehtab Hussain flag-kick and from a counterattack, Kayne Vincent outran the East Bengal goalkeeper to slot the ball home and send the Prayag United bench into ecstasy.

The win puts Prayag United in a commanding position with 32 points from 18 matches, while East Bengal missed their opportunity to get level on points with table toppers Dempo SC.
