Ogba Kalu Nnanna scored the opener for the Goans in the 30th minute, while Lukram James Singh equalised in the 50th minute before Bello Rasaq's penalty gave Prayag the lead for the first time.
Two of Sporting's players, Jovel Martins and Adil Khan received their marching orders in a match that won them a point.
After a half an hour's spell of dominance by the home side, it was Sporting who found the lead early, much against the run of play when midfielder Ogba Kalu bulged the United SC net with a long ranger in the 30th minute.
However, United SC's James Singh was on target after he was released inside the rival box by a fine pass from Brazilian Josimar da Silva Martins to make it 1-1 in the 50th minute.
Just three minutes later, the Kolkata outfit doubled their lead after Jovel Martins was guilty of bringing down Josimar inside his own box. Bello Rasaq stepped ahead to slot in the resultant spot kick.
Sporting were reduced to 10 men in the 57th minute when Martins received his second booking of the evening, but despite the numerical disadvantage the visitors clawed back into the game and found the equaliser in the 87th minute off their Sudanese striker James Moga.
Sporting midfielder Adil Khan also received a red card after the match for misbehaving with referee Magho Singh.
The drawn result had United SC totalling 29 points from 17 rounds while Sporting Clube had 24 points from 17 matches.
