A quickfire double midway in the first half set the tone for the game as defending champions Salgaocar SC overpowered Goan rivals Churchill Brothers 3-0 at the Nehru Stadium.
A fiercely competitive game, as these derbies usually are, Salgaocar seemed to come out on top in the early exchanges, peppering the Churchill goal with shots.
Ryuji Sueoka began the Salgaocar charge when he slipped through the defence and put in a smart flick which Churchill 'keeper Felix D'Souza did well to parry away.
A minute later, Chidi Edeh fired a half-volley right into D'Souza's grateful arms.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 30th minute when Francis Fernandes put a through ball in to Ishfaq Ahmed. The former Mohun Bagan player did well to draw out the goalkeeper and finished with some style.
Salgaocar were more or less assured of the points four minutes later when a snapshot by their Nigerian star striker Chidi Edeh took everyone, D'Souza included, by surprise.
Manuel Gomes tried a few tactical changes in the second half but keeper Karanjit Singh and the Salgaocar defence were like a brick wall. Henri Autchouet, Beto and Mohammad Rafi all went close with their efforts but it wasn't enough.
Salgaocar too had their chances in a commanding display, the best of which was for Ryuji to convert when Ishfaq's attempt rebounded to fall at his feet. But the slippery Japanese midfielder couldn't get it past D'Souza, who had it covered.
However, he did have the last laugh when he converted an 84th minute penalty won by Francis Fernandes after he was brought down by Gouramangi Moirangthem to put the tie beyond all doubt.
