Dempo Sports Club rallied from behind to beat Shillong Lajong 2-1 in the 16th round I-League encounter at a packed JN Sports Complex in Shillong.
It was, however, the host who dominated the play in both the halves but some poor finishing in-front of goal meant they couldn't utilize their possessional dominance.
In the 16th minute of the game, Seikhohau Tuboi’s throw found the feet of Matthew Osvaldo Mayora in front of the goal mouth, but the latter was caught off-guard and he failed to get a shot on goal.
Till the breather the scoreline remained 0-0.
Changing over, both the team kept trying without any success. It was only in the 81st minute of the game that Lajong broke the deadlock when Tuboi headed home from former National player Renedy Singh's corner.
Lajong’s joy was, however, short lived as Ranti Martins' well measured shot from some distance found the back of the net in the 88th minute of the game.
Couple of minutes later referee S. S. Panda of Orissa awarded a spot kick in favour of the Goan side after Wailadmi Passah was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area. Ranti, who was later declared man of the match, made no mistake to give his side a match winner.
The penalty did not go well with the 23,000 odd fans in the stands and they started throwing bottles and stones to the ground to protest, forcing the match commissioner Mrinal Kanti Roy to end the match three minutes during an injury time of four minutes.
With this win Dempo regained the top position with 36 points from 16 matches while Shillong Lajong stays at 17 points from 16 outings.
