Pune FC defeated Mumbai FC 3-0 in an ill-tempered Maharashtra Derby, as both the teams were reduced to ten men in an I-League round 15 encounter at the Balewadi stadium in Pune.
Subash Singh scored the two goals on either side of the half-time and Gurjinder Kumar added a third late in the second half to seal a comfortable victory for the hosts.
Pune FC started with Subash Singh in place of the suspended Mandjou Keita, while Mumbai FC were missing the services of Noel Wilson and also decided to bench Abhishek Yadav.
It was PFC who made the better start to the match as Subash had a chance as early as the third minute but the onrushing Nidhinlal prevented him from getting on the end of a through ball from Douhou.
That attempt set the tone for the early exchanges of the game, as Pune FC piled on the pressure on their opponents, but Khalid Jamil’s side managed to stay firm under pressure, always somehow clearing the danger.
The duo of Izumi Arata and Lester Fernandes provided plenty of width to Pune FC’s attack but the team seemed to miss Keita’s presence upfront.
However mid-way through the half, Derrick Pereira’s men did take the lead when a Douhou cross into the box was latched onto by Subash Singh, who produced a fine finish to put the hosts ahead. Pune FC continued their relentless forays upfront but couldn’t add to their tally.
It took Mumbai FC the best part of half an hour to even get a shot on target, but S. Kuttymani’s effort was weak and straight into Abhra Mondal’s hands.
Arata then had a glorious chance to double the lead for the Red Lizards, but he blasted over when under no pressure inside the box.
Close to the end of the half, L Dhanachandra had the best opportunity to level it for Mumbai FC but his header was just over the bar.
The second half had a scrappy beginning with neither team able to exert their dominance. Mumbai FC created some promising chances down the left wing with P.C Lalwmpuia, but didn’t really trouble Mondal in goal.
Eventually Cavin Lobo did manage a shot on goal, but Mondal made a decent save down to his left. The on-loan keeper from East Bengal did even better, when he saved from a header at point blank range, to keep his team’s lead intact.
Jeje Lalpekhlua almost got his name on the score-sheet when his fierce strike from close range beat the keeper but to his agony, hit the post and came back into play.
It was his strike partner, Subash Singh however, who doubled the lead for the home team as he latched on to a free ball inside the box after Arata’s shot was blocked to score his second in the 68th minute.
Controversy erupted when the players of both the sides got involved in a scuffle. From the sidelines it looked as if Anas Edathodika hit Keegan Pereira who made a meal off it as well. The referee decided to send the duo off, much to the disgust of both the coaches, who registered a strong protest with the fourth referee.
Eventually the two teams resumed play, with Pune FC deciding to go on the defensive, as they replaced both Jeje and Subash with Caitano Costa and S. Venkatesh.
Mumbai FC threw on Yadav in a desperate attempt to get back into the game and the Indian international came close, when his header went just wide of the post.
Gurjinder Kumar then assured the home side all three points when in the 89th minute he bundled the ball home after the keeper failed to collect his first tame effort on goal. Cavin Lobo then saw his fierce effort go just wide in injury time, which was the last notable effort.
The win helped extend Pune FC’s unbeaten streak to nine games, as they stay in fifth on the table, while Mumbai FC continue to hover dangerously above the relegation zone in 11th.
