Salgaocar SC held Churchill Brothers SC to a 1-1 draw in their round seven encounter played at the Nehru stadium, Goa, on Thursday.
Edeh Chidi's 72nd minute goal cancelled ND Opara's opener as the defending champions forced Manuel Gomes' side to split points in the Goan derby.
Karim Bencherifa fielded Gilbert Oliveira and Francis Fernandes on either wings and opted to keep Ryuji Sueoka on the bench, handing Elijah Junior a staring role along side Edeh Chidi.
On the other side, Henry Antchouet and ND Opara played in front with a stalwart defense line consisting of Gouramangi Moirangthem and Antun Kovacic.
Salgaocar enjoyed most of the ball possession in the initial minutes with Churchill Brothers' keeper Felix D'Souza having to pull off the first save off Francis Fernandes' header in the 11th minute.
Three minutes later, Luciano Sobrosa's back pass almost gave away an opening to Antchouet which called for a quick reaction from keeper Karanjit Singh.
Felix D'Souza punched Edeh Chidi's strike in his own penalty area, but Gouramangi Moirangthem was in the right place to avert the danger.
As the play went on, the possession switched to Churchill Brothers who created a few chances around the half hour mark.
In one such move, Opara failed to read the flight of the ball and wasted the opportunity as he lobbed the ball well over Henry's reach, while Lalrindika Ralte fired a few shots off target.
In another doubtful call, Salgaocar defender Khelemba Meetei tripped Henry inside the box but no penalty was given.
Edeh Chidi then hit the post in the 42nd minute. The Nigerian turned to get away from the guards of Gouramangi but his shot was kept out by the woodwork.
Churchill Brothers finally broke the deadlock in the 50th minute when Opara lashed the ball in the top right corner off Lenny Rodrigues' pass.
Salgaocar responded with a powerful shot that beat D'Souza, but Chidi was yet again denied by the woodwork, in the 66th minute.
However, it was none other than Chidi who found the back of the net in the 72nd minute, heading in Rocus Lamare's cross to make it 1-1.
Churchill substitute Bineesh Balan could have been the hero had he been able to direct Denzil Franco's cross on the far end in the late minutes of the match.
Balan squandered another opportunity when he completely missed to connect with the ball before another substitute Jerry Zirsanga shot the remains wide.
