Prayag United and Salgaocar played out a goalless draw at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Saturday evening.
I-League holders Salgaocar had to rely on goalkeeper Karanjit Singh, who stopped a second half penalty from Kayne Vincent to earn Karim Bencherifa's side an away point.
Sanjoy Sen decided to start with Yakubu instead of Joshimar and Gouranga Dutta instead of Snehashish. Sukhen Dey, the long throw specialist, also made a start at left back.
Karim Bencharifa started with Suoeka and Chidi upfront as he looked to record their first away win of the season.
The match started off in spectacular fashion for the away side with Salgaocar seizing control of the game.
Francis Fernandes made two darting runs on the left fl and one of them almost resulted in a goal with Suoeka nearly getting on the end of a dangerous cross.
The first real chance for the home side fell to Kayne Vincent in the twenty-second minute from a corner when the ball fell to him but the striker's effort was straight into the hands of Karanjit.
The rest of the first half was a rather uneventful affair with both teams failing to manufacture good chances in front of goal.
In the second half, Prayag looked a much better unit as they passed the ball better and looked to get behind the Salgaocar backline.
A couple of deadly long throws from Sukhen Dey caused problems for the Salgaocar defence but both Yakubu and Vincent were wasteful with their finishing.
Prayag were awarded a penalty at the hour mark when Biswajit Saha fouled Kanye Vincent inside the Salgaocar box.
Vincent stepped up to take the spot-kick but the former Churchill Brothers player's effort was weak and well saved by Karanjit.
At the other end, Chidi went close with a freekick but Somnath Khara produced a smart save.
Both teams made changes midway through the second period with Shankar Oraon coming on in the sixty-sixth minute for Prayag while Karim introduced Junior and Gilbert to add some fresh legs in the Salgaocar side.
Prayag had a couple of decent chances to win the game in the closing stages but both Shankar Oraon and Yakubu failed to make the most of their respective opportunities.
The match eventually ended in a goalless stalemate, which will disappoint Prayag coach Sanjoy Sen but his side are still unbeaten while Salgaocar's struggling start continues as they are now 11 points behind leaders Dempo.
