Player Ratings: Mexico 1-2 Brazil

Mexico held the lead for much of the game, but threw it away late on after strikes from Ronaldinho and Marcelo rallied the Selecao to victory

    Oswaldo Sánchez

Played an excellent game, making a large quantity of crucial saves to keep Mexico's lead. Was eventually beaten by two top-quality strikes, but nonetheless got the recognition he deserved from the crowd after his 100th and final cap for El Tri.

  • Rodríguez

    Rodríguez

Difficult to beat throughout the game. Defended well, though his distribution left something to be desired and occasionally conceded too much space to Brazil's forwards. Mexico's best defender.

  • Jorge Emmanuel Torres

    Jorge Emmanuel Torres

Didn't look quite up to scratch at the international level. Was harassed frequently by Ronaldinho and Brazil's attack, though he stayed combative and determined.

  • Rafa Márquez

    Rafa Márquez

While his struggles at the club level have been well-documented in recent weeks, he was his usual self with the national team. He kept it tight at the back and added composure to the midfield when moved forward.

  • Jose Andrés Guardado

    Jose Andrés Guardado

Not the Deportivo La Coruna man's best game. Had his penalty saved and struggled to provide consistent service into the box and get behind the Brazil full-backs.

  • Efraín Juárez

    Efraín Juárez

Didn't have the easiest of times tracking Hulk and Neymar, but didn't commit any grievous errors, either. Could have supported the attack a bit more than he did.

  • C. Salcido

    C. Salcido

Though he has been playing as a defensive midfielder for his club side, he didn't look entirely at home in the first half, but improved in the second. Had a sizzling shot go just a foot wide in the closing stages.

  • I. Castro

    I. Castro

Did not get too many touches on the ball and allowed Brazil space in the centre... not a wise thing to do for a central midfielder.

  • Giovani dos Santos

    Giovani dos Santos

Looked dangerous when he got on the ball, but drifted in and out of the game. Was most effective when he ran directly at Brazil's defence, putting them off guard and creating chances.

  • Pablo Edson Barrera

    Pablo Edson Barrera

An electric first half followed by a quieter second half. He tormented Brazil with his runs on and off the ball and forced the own goal out of David Luiz. Didn't contribute as much late on, but still forced Brazil to keep an eye on him and contributed the best service into the box out of any Mexico player on the field.

  • Javier Hernández

    Javier Hernández

Without consistent, quality service, Chicharito was always bound to struggle, though he redeemed himself fairly well. His interplay with Mexico's other attackers outside the 18 helped keep his team moving in the attack. He earned a penalty, and had a shot brilliantly saved by Jefferson.

    Héctor Moreno

Replaced Torres Nilo, moving Marquez into the midfield, but it proved to be a poor choice from Mexico coach de la Torre. He was well beaten by Marcelo on the second goal and played an unenviable part in Mexico's late collapse.

    E. Andrade

    Late substitution for Pablo Barrera.

Late substitution for Giovani Dos Santos.

  • Jefferson

    Jefferson

Made two excellent saves, the first on Andres Guardado's penalty - though he was well off his line - and the second on Chicharito to keep Brazil in the game. However, his lack of communication showed on the own goal and he gave Brazil fans heart attacks every time he came out to try and claim a ball in the air.

  • Daniel Alves

Daniel Alves Flop of the Match

A woeful performance from the Barcelona right-back. Struggled all game long, and the pressure got to him as he picked up two yellow cards in the first half, resulting in his expulsion. The second came from a completely unnecessary challenge on Chicharito that led to a penalty.

  • David Luiz
    8
    1
    2.00

    David Luiz

Scored a dreadful own goal and looked shaky for the whole first half. However, he picked up his game after the break and eventually redeemed himself, coming up with a match-saving header in injury time on a cross looking for Chicharito at the far post.

  • Thiago Silva

    3.00

    Thiago Silva

A solid game from the Milan defender, who did little wrong at the back, though occasionally struggled to cope with some of Mexico's direct running. In the second half he defended smartly and played an important part in keeping Brazil in the game.

  • Marcelo
    36
    4
    4.00

    Marcelo

The best player on the pitch. Though he had some issues positionally early on, he put any doubts about his ability to rest by playing solid defence for the entire second half and pinning Mexico back on their right flank. His goal was nothing short of deserved, and he took the Mexico defenders completely by surprise with his powerful burst into the box before slamming his shot home.

  • Lucas Leiva
    4
    1
    2.50

    Lucas Leiva

Like Israel Castro for Mexico, he was far too anonymous to be effective in the centre of midfield. Did have some good touches, but was beaten for pace a few times and lacked ideas on the ball.

  • Lucas
    5
    1
    2.50

    Lucas

Had some bright touches and occasionally gave Mexico something to think about, but far too inconsistent to pose any sort of sustained threat. Was removed at halftime.

  • Fernandinho
    2
    0
    2.50

    Fernandinho

Combative in midfield, he constantly hassled Mexico and did well to keep them pinned back for large periods of the game. Though he did his job with little fuss, he turned over possession a few too many times as well.

  • Ronaldinho
    77
    1
    3.50

    Ronaldinho Top of the Match

A vintage performance reflecting the revival Ronaldinho has experienced since joining Flamengo. His passing was sublime in the first half and his free kicks constantly kept Oswaldo Sanchez on his toes. While he may have lost a step or two, his vision and ball skills are still world class and he showed he still has something to contribute to Mano Menezes' side.

  • Hulk
    12
    0
    3.00

    Hulk

Hulk's energy caused Mexico plenty of consternation, and he should have tallied an assist with a brilliant backheel pass that Neymar spurned. However, his own shooting was equally wasteful and he could have been better served with some more patient play.

  • Neymar
    21
    2
    3.00

    Neymar

A livewire as always, but similarly, he went to ground far too often looking for the foul. Had a particularly egregious miss early on, but was otherwise his usual troublesome self going forward.

    Adriano

Didn't get too many touches after coming on at the start of the second half for Lucas Moura, but came into his own as the game progressed, limiting Guardado's influence down the left side and creating some of Brazil's better chances going forward.

  • Elias
