Villarreal 0-2 Bayern Munich: Bundesliga Giants Stroll To Victory At El Madrigal
After taking an early lead, the Bavarians comfortably earned three points from their Champions League group stage opener
By Clark Whitney
Bayern Munich began their Champions League Group A campaign on a high note as they earned a 2-0 victory over Villarreal at El Madrigal.
Toni Kroos opened the scoring after just seven minutes, and substitute Rafinha, who replaced the injured Daniel Van Buyten midway through the first half, put the game out of reach in the 76th minute.
After a somewhat shaky start, Franck Ribery broke into the left of the box and cut back to Kroos, who fired a clinical shot from the centre of the box into the net. The Yellow Submarine remained in contention until late, but Rafinha neted the vital second goal with a powerful finish after an impressive solo run.
The opener settled nerves for the visitors, who in the early stages had trouble defending against the dynamic Giuseppe Rossi and Nilmar. In the 21st minute, the Italian had a good chance to equalise, but his finish was saved by Manuel Neuer after he had been played through on goal.
Following Van Buyten's replacement, the visitors were vastly improved in defence, although their opportunities in the attacking area were limited. Kroos had a clear chance to make it 2-0 in the 69th minute, but after lunging to connect with a low cross, he struck the post.
Nils Petersen, who came on for Mario Gomez at the break, also had a pair of chances, but fired straight into Diego Lopez's hands shortly after half-time, and later forced a brilliant save from the goalkeeper.
The game seemed to lose its competitive edge after the second goal, and play slowed down over the closing minutes as the two sides appeared content to settle for the result as it stood. The only noteworthy chance late in the match was a Rossi free kick, which sailed wide of the post.
The result sees Bayern move first in Group A, following Napoli and Manchester City's draw. Villarreal sit fourth in the standings, but are just a point behind the Italian and English contenders.
