The Indian national team went down 3-0 to Trinidad and Tobago in their first match of the ongoing Caribbean tour, played on Sunday evening at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
Stern John opened the scoring from the spot in the first half and Darryl Roberts bagged a second half brace for the hosts, who deservedly won the game but the scoreline could have been much different had Armando Colaco's side taken their chances.
Coach Colaco named the same eleven which started in the first leg of the World Cup qualifier against UAE as goalkeeper Subrata Paul and left back Debabrata Roy returned from suspension.
The duo of Mehtab Hussain and Syed Rahim Nabi also started in the eleven despite joining the squad late because of their visa problems. Sunil Chhetri and Jeje Lalpekhlua started together upfront in the 4-4-2 for the fifth consecutive game.
German coach Otto Pfister was making his debut as Trinidad and Tobago coach and the former Togo tactician also employed a system similar to India’s 4-4-2 although it was more of a 4-2-4 as their wingers were playing further up the Indian half to support the experienced strike-partnership of Stern John and Darryl Roberts.
Both teams looked to attack in the opening stages but the hosts were more threatening from open play while India tried to cause problems for the T&T defence from set-pieces, which included the long throws of Raju Gaekwad.
After the first fifteen minutes, the Soca Warriors started having more control on the game and in the 19th minute they were awarded a penalty when former Holland and Turkey based striker Darryl Roberts was fouled inside the box.
Former English Premier League striker Stern John, who was playing his first international match since 2009, made no mistake from the spot to give T&T the lead. The goal was John’s 70th in international football.

Stern John Scored On His Return
Trinidad started dominated proceedings after the first goal as the combination of Roberts and John were causing the Indian defence all sorts of problems.
Roberts came close for the home side and minutes later John found the back of the net for the second time in the match, however the former Birmingham City and Sunderland player’s effort was ruled out due to offside.
India somehow managed to weather the storm and started creating a few chances of their own with Syed Rahim Nabi in particular looking lively on the left flank. The versatile player came closest for Armando Colaco’s side as his powerful effort went just over the bar.
The South Asians had a couple of other half chances from set-pieces but as the half progressed, Colaco’s boys were content to keep possession and go into the break only 1-0 down.
There were no changes for either side at the interval but India conceded early in the second half as Darryl Roberts scored a fine goal to make it 2-0 in the 47th minute.
The second goal gave Trinidad some breathing space but India started playing much better and had more bodies going forward. However that left more space for T&T to counter attack as Stern John nearly made it 3-0 but was denied by a superb save from Subrata.
Sunil and Jeje started seeing the ball a lot more as India tried to create some pressure on the Trinidad backline but their first real chance of the half came from a Raju long throw as Gouramangi nearly got a free shot on goal.
Minutes later, Sunil was well setup by Jeje but the Arjuna Awardee’s effort was stopped by Trinidad custodian Marvin Phillip.
At the other end though, the hosts could have killed off the game as Hayden Tinto found skipper Densill Theobald free in the box but the central midfielder’s effort was cleared off the line.
It was end to end stuff after the midway point of the second half as India themselves nearly scored but Raju Gaekwad couldn’t connect with his header properly despite being found unmarked from a Dias corner.

Armando Coalco's Side Had Their Chances To Score
India’s best chance of the match fell to young Jeje Lalpekhlua, who did well to create some space for himself inside the Trinidad box but the Mizoram-born striker’s goal bound effort was expertly saved by Phillip.
Both coaches made substitutions around the 80 minute mark with Colaco making as many as three changes and Pfister replaced Stern John with Andre Toussaint.
Toussaint made an almost instant impact as he played a key role in Trinidad’s third goal, which was netted by Darryl Roberts in the 85th minute. Roberts finished off a move which was started after a quickly taken freekick as the hosts scored slightly against the run of play.
There were no further goals in the match as T&T had to settle for a 3-0 win over a nation, placed 65 spots below them in the FIFA Rankings. Coach Pfister would be fairly satisfied to make a winning start with a squad full of local based players.
India got punished for not taking their chances and now must lift themselves up for the next friendly against Guyana in the early hours of Thursday morning (IST).
