Fiorentina 0-0 AC Milan: Boruc Foils Pato, Emanuelson And Ibrahimovic To End Champions' Winning Run
The Rossoneri were denied by the excellent Pole as their positive streak in Serie A was halted on the night they could have gone to the league's summit
By Kris Voakes
The Rossoneri enjoyed the better of the game in both possession and territory, but were ultimately unable to beat in-form goalkeeper Artur Boruc as they squandered the opportunity to go a point clear at the top of the table.
They did have the ball in the back of the net once thanks to Clarence Seedorf, but the goal was erroneously struck out for offside, while tBoruc denied them with two great saves from Alexandre Pato and Urby Emanuelson in the space of a few seconds.
A neat run by Robinho and cultured back-heel from Zlatan Ibrahimovic opened a door for Seedorf to test Boruc, but he sliced a right-foot shot well wide.
Seedorf then found the net after a touch from Ibrahimovic saw him clear, but he was foiled by the linesman’s flag despite replays suggesting the Dutchman was in a legal position.
While Alberto Gilardino was expertly seen off by Thiago Silva at one end, Alberto Aquilano twice came close at the other. First he headed onto the top of the net from a left-wing cross, then he struck a volley over the bar from the edge of the box as the champions continued to threaten.
Milan started the second half as they left off the first, with Antonio Nocerino flashing a low drive just wide of the near post, capitalising on yet more domination of possession.
Though the flow generally continued unabated, the home side did forge the odd opening, with Manuel Pasqual sending a left-foot drive just wide of the far post with Christian Abbiati scrambling across.
Substitute Pato then saw his first clean strike at goal tipped onto the far post by Boruc, with Emanuelson’s follow-up effort also being kept out by the Pole as it began to look like it really wasn’t AC Milan’s night.
Boruc added another save from Ibrahimovic and rushed out to block Pato's run before the end to ensure that Delio Rossi didn't suffer defeat in his first game in charge of the home side.
The result means Lazio head the league table this evening, with Milan sitting one point back in second place, ahead of Udinese on goal difference. The Viola climb three places ahead of tomorrow's fixtures thanks to their point.Fiorentina travel to Palermo for their next fixture on Sunday in a week, with Milan hosting Chievo later the same evening.
