Valencia 4-0 Betis: Los Che collect comfortable home victory against nine-man Verdiblancos

After a tough result on Thursday in the Europa League, the hosts rebounded with a complete performance to hand Pepe Mel's side a comprehensive defeat

By Roger Gonzalez

Goals from Jonas, Sofiane Feghouli, Roberto Soldado and Pablo Piatti carried Valencia to an important 4-0 win over nine-man Real Betis on Sunday at Mestalla in La Liga action.

With thoughts of reaching the Europa League final and holding onto third place in the league on their minds, Los Che managed to convert their chances and stifle the visiting attack, avoiding a third consecutive loss.

Entering the contest, the home fans were eager to witness a win with the team in poor form as of late. Luckily for them, Valencia took the lead just after six minutes. Dani Parejo found Jonas at the top of the box with a low ball, and the Brazilian managed to find Soldado at the right side of the box with a chipped pass. The Spaniard returned the ball to the former Gremio man, who finished with a little touch past Fabricio Ramirez from close.

The first half passed with few chances for either side before Valencia managed to put together one of their best halves of the season.

12 minutes into the second half, Betis' task became infinitely more difficult when Jose Dorado brought down Feghouli on the edge of the area, and was handed a straight red.

Valencia then took advantage; on 63 minutes, the home team passed the ball around and managed to double their lead. Down the left flank, Sergio Canales curled in a pin-point cross that found Feghouli, who only needed one touch to fire the ball into the back of the net after doing well to separate himself from a defender.

Then, with Valencia dominating the ball and moving well, Soldado managed to grab his goal with a little touch at the front post, after Piatti did well to play in a ball to the Spanish star, who finished well.

The Argentine would get his goal two minutes later. Miscommunication in defence saw a loose ball be picked up by Piatti, who gained possession at the top of the box and fired home, securing a four-goal thrashing in the process.

Jorge Molina received his marching orders for protesting to the referee, compounding an evening to forget for the side from Seville.

Both teams will face Atletico Madrid in their next outings: Valencia will host Diego Simeone's men on Thursday in the Europa League semi-final second leg, while Betis face them at home next week in league play.
