Bayern Munich 7-1 Hoffenheim: Injuries to Gomez, Robben & Boateng mar emphatic victory for Bavarians

The German record champions earned a tremendous result over the village side, but knocks to several key players cast tarnished what was a memorable afternoon

Bayern Munich rebounded from last week's Bundesliga loss to Leverkusen by inflicting a 7-1 hammering upon Hoffenheim at the Allianz Arena. Five goals in the first half saw the Bavarians take control of the match comfortably early on, and two more after the break rounded off the scoring.

Mario Gomez had a hat-trick, Arjen Robben a double, and Toni Kroos and Franck Ribery each added a strike as the German record champions earned an emphatic result. A late own goal from Luiz Gustavo served as little consolation for the visitors.

Gomez, who had not been on target for four matches heading into the fixture, found the net after just five minutes, finishing off a fine attacking sequence he had started as he hammered home a loose ball in the centre of the penalty area.

Just six minutes later, Philipp Lahm surged into the right side of the box, pounced to claim possession and won a penalty from Marvin Compper. Robben stepped up to the spot and made no mistake in doubling the hosts' advantage.

Things went from bad to worse for Hoffenheim on 18 minutes as Kroos fired a low drive from well outside the box and inside the left post.

The 22-year-old Germany international nearly had a double in the 28th minute, but after a nice run missed narrowly wide of the post. Seconds later, Robben was on target, however, rounding goalkeeper Tom Starke and slotting home after a perfect through-pass from Franck Ribery.

Gomez had his double after 35 minutes: the Germany international stepped forward to nod Ribery's cross into the net. And on 47 minutes, he completed his hat-trick to make it 6-0 with a towering header from a corner.

The match was not all positive for Bayern, however, as Jerome Boateng was forced off at half-time after picking up a knock to his knee, and Gomez limped off in the 55th minute.

Following Gomez's third, Bayern pressed on still, and Holger Badstuber and Thomas Muller both had close calls before Ribery finally got his goal in the 58th minute. Following a powerful run during which he brushed off a challenge, Robben slipped the ball through to the Frenchman, who rounded Stark and finished from a tight angle.

Muller forced a fine save on the hour mark, but would end his afternoon early and without a goal, as Bastian Schweinsteiger made his long-awaited return as a substitute for the final half-hour.

Play slowed down later in the match, but Ryan Babel forced a consolation goal for the visitors as he took possession from Luiz Gustavo, who had slipped. The pair were in a foot race, and the Bayern man had the last touch as he put the ball past Manuel Neuer on 85 minutes.

As full-time approached, Bayern's injury woes compounded as Robben tracked down a loose ball and was felled from behind by Edson Braafheid, turning his ankle in the process. Moments later, the whistle blew for full-time, and the Dutch winger limped during post-match formalities.

The result sees Bayern temporarily move to within four points of leaders Dortmund, who play later on Saturday. Hoffenheim slip to 12th, level on points with Mainz.
