Borussia Dortmund 4-0 Augsburg: Lewandowski Hat-Trick Seals Emphatic Victory For Defending Champions

The Bundesliga minnows simply had no answer for the Polish striker, who plundered a hat-trick and an assist to round off a one-sided win for the defending champions

Borussia Dortmund got their Bundesliga campaign back on track with a convincing 4-0 win over Augsburg at the Signal Iduna Park.

A hat-trick by Robert Lewandowski and a second-half strike from Mario Gotze sealed the win for the hosts, who also had Roman Weidenfeller to thank for saving a penalty shortly after the interval.

Dortmund almost found themselves a goal down on 13 minutes after a calamitous defensive error by Mats Hummels and goalkeeper Weidenfeller. The BVB pair’s miscommunication allowed Daniel Brinkmann to loft a header over them both towards an empty net, but Felipe Santana was alert to stop the goal-bound effort with his head.

However, the hosts soon went on the offensive, Mario Gotze forcing Simon Jentzsch into s smart stop before Jakub Błaszczykowski sent a header off target from a great position in the 23rd minute. Augsburg were handed a blow moments later when Marcel De Jong was hauled off for Tobias Werner, the Canadian defender failing to run off an earlier collision with Sven Bender.

Dortmund eventually took the lead on the half-hour mark, though they will be indebted to the visitors for practically gifting them the goal with a piece of comedy defending. A failed attempt at shielding the ball from Gibril Sankoh and a lack of communication from Jentzsch allowed Błaszczykowski to find Lewandowski, who made no mistake from eight yards out.

The momentum was now fully with the hosts, and Lewandowski grabbed his second a minute before half time with another poacher’s effort. Santana’s effort from Gotze’s free kick was blocked right into the path of the Pole, who slotted home into the corner.

Augsburg had a great opportunity to get back into the game five minutes after the interval with a penalty, given after Ilkay Gundogan felled Axel Bellinghausen inside the area. However, Sankoh’s miserable afternoon continued after Weidenfeller dived to the bottom-right corner to save his attempt from 12 yards out.

Dortmund nearly grabbed a third goal in the 62nd minute after a barnstorming run by Gotze. The German international marauded down the right flank, skipping past three Augsburg players, but his effort at the end of the move was tipped around the far post by Jentzsch. Two minutes later, a clever flick by Ivan Perisic almost found the net, but a goal-line headed clearance by Werner prevented the visitors from falling further behind.

However, Jurgen Klopp’s men were not to be denied, and grabbed the third on 74 minutes with a breathtaking goal. Lewandowski released Gotze with a pinpoint through ball, and the young German kept his cool to loft the ball over Jentzsch. Minutes later, Gotze turned provider for Lewandowski to complete his hat-trick, crossing the ball in from the byline for the Polish striker to head home a simple goal.

Dortmund played out the rest of the match with consummate ease, with Augsburg completely deflated after the fourth goal. The defending champions picked up their second straight win and move onto 13 points after eight rounds.
