Live Commentary

  • There is the final whistle. Manchester United were under par for large periods but still managed to get a win that takes them to second in the table. Wes Brown's return to the ground wasn't a happy experience as his own goal settled matters.
  • 90' + 2'
    SubstitutionDarren Fletcher Fabio Da Silva
  • 90' + 1'
United try and slow the game right down now as they seek to return to winning ways at home after the disastrous 6-1 defeat to Manchester City.
  • 89'
Sunderland running out of time here and United are looking the most likely to score now.
  • 86'
Big chance to finish the game off. Carrick picks up the ball on the edge of the area and plays an incisive ball towards Hernandez. In acres of space the Mexican spins and shoots but gets it all wrong from ten yards out.
  • 83'
    SubstitutionJi-Sung Park Michael Carrick
  • 83'
United are looking a little nervy as they try and get over the line. Sunderland are pushing forward as much as they can but can't find that end product yet.
  • 80'
Appeals for a penalty once again as Larsson plays a delightful ball across the six-yard box only for Bendtner to miss the ball. The striker feels he's been pushed out of it by Jones but the referee remains unmoved.
  • 79'
Sunderland certainly trying to force the pace a bit more here but it could leave spaces at the back for United to counter on. Ten minutes or so to get something out of the game.
  • 76'
    SubstitutionStéphane Sessegnon Ahmed El Mohamady
  • 76'
    SubstitutionJack Colback David Meyler
  • 76'
Somewhat surprisingly Sessegnon is one of the players to make way.
  • 74'
Sunderland will have to gamble in the next 15 minutes to try and force something from the game. Meyler and Elmohamady are being readied on the touchline.
  • 73'
    SubstitutionDanny Welbeck D. Berbatov
  • 71'
It's taken time for this game to come to the boil but it is heating now. Westwood makes a wonderful double save to keep the score at 1-0. First Rooney struck the ball from 12 yards out and the follow up seemed destined for the roof of the net from Evra but the keeper gets up to tip it over.
  • 68'
Confusion aplenty at Old Trafford as Sunderland are initially awarded a penalty by the linesman but the furious United players are adamant the ball as handled by Dong-Won. Referee and linesman confer and the decision is reversed much to the delight of the home crowd.
  • 65'
Superb defending from Richardson. Nani and Hernandez exchanged passes before the winger tries to get his shot away but Richardson gets across to block. From the resultant corner Rochardson is again on hand to clear off the line. Sunderland living dangerously now.
  • 62'
Good spell of possession for Sunderland but they aren't able to create any concrete chances. The ball ends up going harmlessly wide off the head of Bendtner.
  • 59'
Will be interesting to see when Sunderland decide to gamble and try and get something from the game. United keeping them very much at arm's length for now.
  • 56'
Will be interesting to see when Sunderland decide to gamble and try and get something from the game. United keeping them very much at arm's length for now.
  • 56'
Certainly a bit more pace and purpose from United in this half and Sunderland seem to have been affected by the goal just before the break. They can't get on to the ball right now.
  • 53'
That wasn't too far away. Nani lined up a free kick from 30 yards and his striker ricocheted off Turner's head and creeps wide of the goal.
  • 52'
Much of the action fairly similar to the first half but there are signs that United are trying to push the pace a little more.
  • 49'
United seem to have moved to a 4-4-2 formation with Hernandez and Welbeck up front while Rooney will continue alongside Fletcher.
  • 46'
We're back underway at Old Trafford and both sides are unchanged.
  • 45' + 4'
The whistle is blown to end a largely forgettable half of football. United have been bereft of ideas for large periods but they lead through the goal at the death. Ferguson may still have some choice words his players in the changing room.
  • 45' + 2'
    Yellow Card Dong-Won Ji
  • 45' + 1'
GOOOOAAAAALLLLL!!!! From the resultant corner Nani crosses for Welbeck who leaps higher than everyone else to head home, although Brown looked to have got the last touch on his return to Old Trafford.
  • 45' + 1'
Finally a save is forced by United. Excellent play from Jones and Nani from the right before the winger shoots at the keeper. Brown rather hastily gets rid of the ball for a corner.
  • 45'
    Own Goal Wes Brown
  • 45'
    Assist Nani
  • 43'
The closest we have come to a goal and it falls to Phil Jones who is yet to score a senior goal. Jones gets the ball on the edge of the area and his volley goes just over the bar with Westwood stretching. Four minutes to be added on.
  • 42'
    Yellow Card Sebastian Larsson
  • 41'
Dong-Won has a snap shot from outside the area after taking advantage of some slack United passing. However the Korean striker should have done better and it heads wide.
  • 38'
Penalty shout in the Sunderland box. Hernandez is played in by Fletcher and the Mexican is eased off the ball by Larsson and the referee made the right decision. Plenty to admire about the way Sunderland are defending.
  • 35'
Richardson is down now as he tangles with team mate Colback and comes off worst. Plenty of attention being paid to his head and neck but he looks as if he'll be ok to continue.
  • 32'
United get a shot on target as Rooney shoots from 30 yards. It's not hit with much pace and is straight at Westwood.
  • 29'
Sunderland fans making a little noise in the stands but that is the only noteworthy thing in the game at the moment. United are incredibly laboured right now and I don't imagine Ferguson is hugely pleased with what he's seeing.
  • 26'
United having plenty of possession but they are doing absolutely nothing with it for now. Sunderland are working extremely hard to prevent the home side from creating chances.
  • 23'
Rooney is really struggling to in the game right now. His latest attempt at a pass goes astray and Sir Alex would want him to try and impose himself on the game more.
  • 20'
Sunderland increasing in confidence now as Bendtner looks to get on the ball as much as possible. Slow nature of the game is making defending relatively easy for both teams thus far.
  • 17'
Muted atmosphere at Old Trafford and it is being reflected in the football. It's been quite a poor opening and the home team may have to show a bit more adventure if they want break down their obdurate oponents.
  • 14'
Half a chance for Sunderland now. Richardson broke down the left hand side and floated in a good cross for Bendtner who manages to skew his header towards Larsson. The Swede's strike is deflected into the side netting though.
  • 12'
The game is moving a very slow pace right now. Sunderland setting up to get as many men behind the ball as possible and United are finding it difficult to break down.
  • 9'
First half chance as Hernandez nearly gets on the end of an incisive cross from Nani. Had there been a little more pace on the ball the Mexican may have been able to finish from six yards.
  • 7'
Pretty disjointed start here at Old Trafford, not helped by the injury to Wickham. United trying to impose themselves on the game with plenty of possession but little in the way of substance just yet.
  • 5'
    SubstitutionConnor Wickham Dong-Won Ji
  • 4'
Wickham is being stretchered off and that is such a shame to happen so early. The striker is being replaced by Ji Dong-Won.
  • 2'
Connor Wickham is down and looks hurt. It looks as if he's twisted his knee which will be a painful one. This would put Bruce's plans in tatters.
  • 1'
Sunderland get the game underway in front of the vociferous supporters.
  • A minutes silence will be observed in honour of remembrance Sunday.
  • Sir Alex gives a rousing speech in front of the Old Trafford fans, thanking them all for their fantastic support through the years as he has a stand named after him.
  • Sunderland also three changes to their lineup as they continue to forge ahead after a stuttering start to the season. Lee Cattermole, Kieren Westwood and Phil Bardsley all come in for the David Vaughan, Simon Mignolet and John O'Shea.
  • After impressing in his role in central midfield in the Champions League, Wayne Rooney gets another chance to show why some people are calling him the rightful successor to Paul Scholes. The team makes three changes with Anders Lindegaard, Rio Ferdinand and Nani all returning to the starting lineup in what the home fans will be hoping is a rightful celebration of Sir Alex Ferguson's 25th year anniversary of being at the helm.
  • Sunderland lineup: Westwood, Bardsley, Brown, Turner, Richardson, Larsson, Cattermole, Colback, Sessegnon, Bendtner, Wickham. Subs: Carson, Gardner, Ji, Meyler, McClean, Elmohamady, Egan.
  • Manchester United lineup: Lindegaard, Jones, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Nani, Fletcher, Rooney, Park, Welbeck, Hernandez. Subs: De Gea, Evans, Berbatov, Carrick, Fabio Da Silva, Valencia, Diouf.
  • Good afternoon everyone and welcome to's commentary of Sunderland's visit to Old Trafford to face Manchester United. United will be looking to pump up the pressure on rivals Manchester City, while Sunderland aim to move into the top half of the table.
