Valencia 2-1 Athletic Bilbao: Vicente The Hero As Home Side Extend Their Lead At The Top Of La Liga

Aritz Aduriz also on target in home win...

By David Schiavone

Vicente - Valencia
Valencia remain top of La Liga following a comfortable victory over Athletic Bilbao on Saurday evening.

Goals from Aritz Aduriz and Vicente sealed the three points for Unai Emery’s side before a Igor Gabilond strike salvaged some pride for the visitors.

Valencia took the game by force from the kick off and put Bilbao under intense pressure. Mehmet Topal and Manuel Fernandes took control of the midfield early on and the hosts looked threatening from the outset.

The dominance exhibited by Los Che paid dividends as Aduriz put the home side in front after eleven minutes from a close range header. But it was the slick build-up play which excited the Mestalla faithful. Pablo Hernandez played a delightful back-heel pass into the path of Roberto Soldado, who burst into the box and shrugged off a defender before sending the ball across for the forward to finish.

Valencia’s onslaught was relentless as Juan Mata, Aduriz and Topal all had shots that were close to finding the target, but hosts enjoyed most of the play down the flanks with the full-backs more than happy to push forward. Jeremy Mathieu particularly impressed on the left.

In response Los Leones could only manage brief excursions into Valencia's half and even then they did not hold onto the ball for long as Emery's side displayed an impressive desire to regain possession.

After the half-time break, Athletic looked to make further attacking inroads by bringing on Markel Susaeta.

But Valencia created more chances and Soldado also had a goal rightly ruled out for offside, as he strayed beyond the last defender when receiving a pass from Mata.

Athletic started to search for an equaliser and Susaeta had a shot blocked by the back of Ricardo Costa, but their efforts were in vain as Vicente sealed the result for Valencia with a well-taken stoppage time goal.

Less then a minute later, Gabilondo grabbed a goal with an impressive free kick to give his side a lifeline but it came too late.

Following the victory Valencia have extended their lead at the top of La Liga to four points though nearest Barcelona and Villarreal have yet to play, while Athletic Bilbao remain in ninth.
