Player Ratings: Sunderland 2-1 Chelsea (aet)

The Black Cats booked their place in the Capital One Cup semi-finals with an incredible comeback in extra time, with Fabio Borini having nabbed a late equaliser

Had barely anything to do in the opening period as some wayward Chelsea shooting lightened his workload. Could not prevent the ball bundling over the line for the opener despite his best efforts. Produced a great stop to prevent De Bruyne from doubling the visitors' lead and another in stoppage time kept his side in it.

  • Wes Brown

    Wes Brown

A sloppy display as the central defender was guilty of giving away possession in his own half on a couple of occasions. Was teased by the footwork of Schurrle and made to look a little silly by the German as he danced passed him on a couple of occasions.

    Ondřej Čelůstka

Preoccupied with the threat of Chelsea on the break and, as a result, barely got forward, Still, did not afford anyone in a blue shirt much joy down his flank and, in extra time, began to throw caution to the wind as he made a few darts down the right-hand side.

    John O'Shea

The captain constantly stubbed out the threat of Eto'o in the first half, keeping a close eye on the striker and allowing him very little space. Did the same with Ba when he was introduced into the action, although he found the former Newcastle man's strength much more of a challenge.

  • Andrea Dossena

    Andrea Dossena

Put in a great deal of effort to get forward to aid Giaccherini although his crossing let him down on a regular basis. Unlucky not to win his side a penalty when his cross was blocked by the arm of Azpilicueta but deserved no such sympathy for his silly challenge on Willian that drew a booking.

  • Sebastian Larsson

    Sebastian Larsson

Cut a frustrated figure as his team-mates failed to capitalise on some dangerous set-piece deliveries throughout the match. Lapses in concentration probably did not help his mood as both Willian and Lampard profited from dithering moments from the Swede.

  • Craig Gardner

    Craig Gardner

An underwhelming display saw the midfielder brought off for Ki before he could do any more damage. His passing was not up to scratch and he was almost guilty of wrapping things up for Chelsea when he unintentionally played in Eto'o with one of his wayward balls.

  • Adam Johnson

    Adam Johnson

Enjoyed the freedom at times afforded to him by a stretched Chelsea side and put his head down on occasions, embarking on driving runs, though unfortunately with no end product.

Emanuele Giaccherini Top of the Match

Displayed some early flair on the left flank and was a constant nuisance for Azpilicueta. One of the top performers for Sunderland as he constantly gave blue shirts the slip and was pivotal in creating the equaliser, slipping in Altidore at the right moment.

Sunderland have certainly missed their midfield enforcer in the past weeks and it is no coincidence his inclusion tonight coincided with a more robust display from the Black Cats in the middle of the park. Was unfortunate to have an own goal against his name, his determination getting the better of him as he slid beyond his own keeper.

  • Jozy Altidore

    Jozy Altidore

His strength was something that Chelsea could not handle when these sides met in December and again his bustling and hustling created opportunities that otherwise would not have been there, epitomised by his dogged determination in getting his effort away before Borini slotted home.

    Sung-Yong Ki

Arrived on the scene in place of the iffy Gardner. Added a much-needed calmness in the midfield, although his reluctance to take shooting opportunities rankled with the home fans. Turned hero as he stroked home the winning goal.

    Fabio Borini

Made a big impression when brought on, finally giving Cole some food for thought on the right. Took his goal superbly with not much to aim at and could have won it with a couple of other chances.

  • Mark Schwarzer

May as well have sat in the stands with the supporters for large chunks of the game as his role was restricted to catching the odd cross and fetching the ball for a goal kick when Sunderland shot wide, which even then was not that often. Still conceded his side's first goal in this year's Capital One Cup, although he could not have done much more, shepherding Altidore away from goal well before the ball broke to Borini.

  • David Luiz

    David Luiz

Took one for the team when he picked up a booking for bodychecking Giaccherini with the Italian threatening to burst through on goal. Prone to the odd foray forward, as ever, he still came up trumps with a couple of important blocks and challenges.

  • Gary Cahill

    Gary Cahill

Showed a good understanding with Luiz as the pair covered each other's backs and on the whole dealt with the threat of Altidore. Distributed the ball well out of defence and prevented Borini form stealing victory at the end of normal time with a crucial challenge.

  • César Azpilicueta

    César Azpilicueta

Given a real headache by Dossena and Giaccherini down Chelsea's left, caught in possession and outwitted by clever flicks on a number of occasions. Fortunate not to give away a penalty when clearly raising his arm to block Dossena's cross. Sharp going forward, though, laying on the first goal, but his evening ended through injury after a tangle with Altidore.

A quiet day at the office for the England left-back as he drove Johnson infield to find any space. Was given a little more food for thought by the introduction of Borini but still barely broke a sweat.

  • John Obi Mikel

    John Obi Mikel

Provided a sturdy platform for the Blues as he anchored the midfield. Covered a lot of ground in stifling Johnson and Giaccherini on both wings. Reinforced his tough image with a couple of tasty challenges in the middle.

  • Kevin De Bruyne

    Kevin De Bruyne

Looked utterly freezing out on the pitch but soon warmed up as he got at Dossena. Linked up nicely with Schurrle and could have put his side out of sight when teed up by Lampard, only to see his effort tipped away brilliantly by Mannone.

  • Willian

    Willian

The Brazilian looked lively throughout, dancing his way past red-and-white shirts and spreading the play with some eye-catching crossfield balls. Had opportunities to get his name on the scoresheet, too, but struggled to find the target when in promising positions.

  • Frank Lampard

    Frank Lampard

Did not bring a great deal to the midfield for the visitors and almost looked out of place as he struggled to link up with the dynamic trio in front of him. More influential in the second period as he forced Cattermole into bundling the ball over his own line and then showed great strength and determination in setting up De Bruyne.

  • Samuel Eto'o

    Samuel Eto'o

Another goalless outing for the Cameroonian, in which he seemed to lack a bit in the way of movement, allowing the trio in behind him to do the groundwork. Twice was gifted chances but twice failed to take them, his second miss especially poor.

  • Andre Schürrle

    Andre Schürrle

Looked to emulate team-mate Hazard by tormenting the Sunderland back line and made a fool of Brown as he turned the central defender inside out. Denied by Mannone on a couple of occasions but a constant thorn in the side of the hosts.

Michael Essien Flop of the Match

Came on at right-back for the injured Azpilicueta and never looked comfortable. Booked for a challenge on the edge of area and was really a liability for his side.

    Eden Hazard

The main attraction when these sides met at the beginning of December but failed to rediscover that form when he came off the bench and was reduced to a peripheral role.

    Demba Ba

Gave his team-mates a much better target than Eto'o offered, as his darting runs caught O'Shea and Brown on there toes a number of times. Constantly denied, though, either by wayward finishes or desperate defending.
