    Costel Pantilimon

Was largely untroubled as his defence dealt well with Wigan's interchanging of positions and crisp passing. Was dominant in the air from corners due to his 6'8" frame.

  • D. Boyata

    2.50

    D. Boyata

Looked slightly nervous, which was to be expected given that this was his first appearance since May 2011 for the first team. His passing was sloppy and was often caught in behind by Dicko.

  • Gael Clichy

    Gael Clichy

Was not able to get forward enough, as City focused most of their attacks down the right, but aided youngster Lopes when required and was a steady influence on the defence.

  • Joleon Lescott

    Joleon Lescott

Not as assured in possession as he could have been but helped guide Boyata and lead the defensive pack. Came out of defence well, though, to help get City on the front foot.

  • Micah Richards
    13
    0
    4.00

    Micah Richards

Impressed on his return to the first-team fold. Not offered many tests defensively but attacked well, linking up with Milner on several occasions down the right, and came close with two bullet headers in the first half. Set up a goal with a peach of a cross.

  • Fernandinho
    14
    2
    3.50

    Fernandinho

Defended with responsibility but also got forward to add another dimension to the home side's attack. Set up the opener with a delightfully scooped pass through to Dzeko. Taken off at the interval despite his commanding performance.

  • James Milner
    11
    1
    4.00

    James Milner

Typically efficient and combative down the right. Sent in a number of excellent crosses and linked up well with Richards throughout. Filled in for his defensive colleague when needed. Even popped up on the left to set up the fourth goal of the contest.

  • Javi García
    12

    3.00

    Javi García

Failed to get tight enough to some of the Latics' midfield but sat deep to thwart the away side's chance of a swift counterattack.

  • Marcos Lopes
    12
    0
    3.00

    Marcos Lopes

A promising display from the teenager, who showed excellent awareness of where his team-mates were and was tidy on the ball. Hit the crossbar with a venomous first-half effort but faded slightly in the second half.

  • Edin Dzeko
    19

    3.50

    Edin Dzeko

Led the line well for his side, winning headers and finding the likes of Jovetic and Lopes in space before darting into the area. Was rewarded for his workmanlike performance up top when he steered home Fernandinho's pass.

  • Stevan Jovetic

Stevan Jovetic Top of the Match

A superb home debut for the Montenegrin, who hassled and harried the Latics' back line and showed some silky skills and touches. Neat and lively around the penalty area and deserved his second-half strikes for such a wonderful contribution to his side's win.

Substitutions

  • Jesús Navas González

    3.50

    Jesús Navas González

Stretched Wigan's tired defence as City went in search of more goals and found the decisive and telling touch when slipped through by Negredo to make it 5-0.

  • Yaya Touré
    16
    0
    4.00

    Yaya Touré

Came on at half-time and set the tone for City's performance as he dominated proceedings in the middle of the park. His cameo was rounded off with a superb curling free kick into the top corner.

  • Negredo
    13
    1
    3.00

    Negredo

Came on in the latter stages but still made an impact against a Wigan defence counting down to the whistle as he played in Navas for the fifth strike of the night.

  • Lee Nicholls

    0
    2.50

    Lee Nicholls

Severely tested for the majority of the game but overcame an early error to put in a terrific display and keep the score down. Saved well from Richards and Dzeko in particular but could do nothing about any of the goals.

  • Emmerson Boyce
    1
    0
    2.50

    Emmerson Boyce

Seemed inhibited by Lopes's and Jovetic's constant movement as he remained in his defensive perimeter rather than venturing forward for the most part, which proved a wise choice.

  • Juan Carlos García
    0
    1
    2.00

    Juan Carlos García

Shifted into a left-wing role and failed to show any of his natural defensive instincts. Richards and Milner teamed up on Crainey as the Honduran remained upfield. Had no real influence up going forward, either.

  • Leon Barnett
    0
    1
    2.00

    Leon Barnett

Another who endured a torrid night as he was bullied by Dzeko and outpaced by Jovetic. Never really got to grips with the task at hand.

  • Stephen Crainey

    Stephen Crainey

Started brightly and got forward in the early stages, too, but was slowly but surely pushed back by Milner, who grew into the game himself. Unable to make a telling impact.

  • Thomas Rogne

    2.00

    Thomas Rogne

One could tell the step up in class that the Norwegian was experiencing as he failed to contend with the flair of City's front line. Looked to his defensive partners for help but it was not always forthcoming.

  • Chris McCann
    1
    0
    2.50

    Chris McCann

A baptism of fire for the young midfielder but he coped well in the main, spraying around a series of neat passes and maintaining a midfield position that belied his tender years.

  • Fraser Fyvie

Fraser Fyvie Flop of the Match

Anonymous. The midfielder really struggled in the middle of the park to even get the ball, let alone make much of a contribution to his side's display. Felled Jovetic, which ultimately led to the third City goal.

  • Jordi Gómez
    2
    0
    3.50

    Jordi Gómez

One of the Latics' most impressive performers. Typically technician-like in his work but also showed a willingness to get back and help out his side despite a slightly unfamiliar right-wing role.

  • R. Espinoza
    0
    0
    2.50

    R. Espinoza

Neat in possession but offered precious little drive from midfield and was largely on the periphery when City started to crank up the pressure on his side.

  • Nouha Dicko
    0
    0
    3.00

    Nouha Dicko

Fought a lonely battle down the middle as he chased long ball after long ball. Tried his utmost for every lost cause but was neither supplied with accurate balls from behind him or the support from his fellow forward-thinking players.

Substitutions

  • Daniel Redmond

    Daniel Redmond

So far off the pace when he emerged off the bench. Had no impact other than to chase shadows around the pitch as his side were well beaten.

  • Ryan Shotton

    Ryan Shotton

Could not cope when he was somewhat fairly introduced. His arrival coincided with Jovetic scoring the crucial second to open the floodgates.

  • Nick Powell

    Nick Powell

Did nothing during his 10 minutes on the pitch.
