Sporting Clube de Goa 3-3 Salgaocar: Title hopes end for Derrick Pereira's side

Salgaocar's title hopes were dashed as Oscar Bruzon's side held them to a 3-3 draw in an exciting encounter...

Sporting Clube de Goa and Salgaocar played out a 3-3 draw in round 25 of the I-League. Early goals from Darryl Duffy and Dudu Omagbemi handed Salgaocar the early initiative. Sporting fought back as goals from Ogba Kalu and Boima Karpeh ensured that the scores remained level at half time. Sporting went on to take the lead following Rowllin Borges' goal in the second half. Substitute Bikash Jairu ensured that Salgaocar left with a point with his 90th minute strike.

Oscar Bruzon made two changes to his side as Matthew Gonsalves and Jovel Martins made their way into the starting eleven while Derrick Pereira didn’t alter his winning line-up.

The game started at frantic pace and Rojen Singh was at fault for tripping Darryl Duffy inside the box which left referee Pratap Singh no option but to point to the spot. Duffy converted by slotting it to Melroy Fernandes’s right in the fourth minute to put his side ahead.

The lead was doubled soon after when Freiman Peixoto releases Francis Fernandes on the right whose cross was thundered into the back of the net by Dudu Omagbemi.

Salgaocar FC should have been 3-0 up had it not been for their goalkeeper who parried Matthew Foschini’s dipping free-kick for a corner.

Sporting managed to pull one back in the 20th minute through Kalu Nnanna who headed in from close range after a brilliant cross from Rowllin Borges.

The goal spurred them up but Salgaocar’s tough tackling ensured that they didn’t create any clear-cut chance until the 40th minute when Borges’s shot was just about kept out by Karanjit Singh by conceding a corner-kick.

Sporting chose to go short in the corner-kick and Beevan D’Mello sent in a tantalizing ball which evaded everyone and fell for Boima Karpeh who tapped it in to level scores.

Seven minutes after the break, Sporting should have taken the lead but the woodwork came to Salgaocar’s rescue. This was after Karpeh exchanged a quick one-two with Cajetan Fernandes to see his shot come off the crosspiece.

Dudu should have done better when Duffy found him with an inch perfect ball inside the box but the Nigerian headed it straight into the hands of the Sporting custodian.

The Nigerian was presented with another chance when he found himself one-on-one with the keeper. He went around the keeper Melroy Fernandes, but the Sporting custodian got the faintest of touches to par it away.

The home team finally took the lead in the 73rd minute, courtesy of a Rowllin Borges goal. Velito Cruz laid it up perfectly for the midfielder who blasted the ball into the back of the net to hand his team the advantage.

Salgaocar did manage to find the equalizer in the 90th minute much the delight of the fans. Matthew Foschini's cross from the right met Bikash Jairu on the far end of the box whose left foot volley found it's way into the net.

Neither team could go on to clinch the equalizer as the match ended in an exciting 3-3 draw. Salgaocar's title chances effectively end after the draw. Derrick's side can reach a maximum of 41 points if they manage to win their final game, but they would still be behind Benglauru FC based on the head to head rule.
