Player Ratings: Valencia 0-3 Swansea

Michael Laudrup's side travelled to Spain for their opening fixture in Europa League Group A and came away with a fantastic win thanks after Adil Rami's early red card

    Guaita

A highly rated goalkeeper in his own right, but he was not given much hope against Swansea. Their finishing was ruthless and the Valencia defence were awful after the sending off. Guaita could do little to deter the Swans.

  • Adil Rami

Adil Rami Flop of the Match

After a summer of speculation about his future, Rami has started three league games at the heart of an unsettled defence but he only hindered Valencia on Thursday. A loss of concentration saw Bony drift past him and he brought the forward down for a straight red card early on. His team-mates faced an uphill battle from then.

  • Jose Andrés Guardado

    Jose Andrés Guardado

Unfortunately for Valencia their left-back endured a rather stifled match. He found his hands full with Dyer meaning attacking forrays were rare, and at the back he was battered by the rapid winger.

  • Barragán
    0
    1
    2.50

    Barragán

Few will actively remember Barragan from his brief spell with Liverpool under Rafa Benitez and even few will recall this performance over the coming season. Offered nothing going forward and failed to close Tiendalli down for his numerous, admittedly poor, crosses.

  • Jérémy Mathieu

    Jérémy Mathieu

The one constant at the heart of the Valencia defence on Thursday and although he did look shaky at times, he was better than his partners. Usually a left-back, he did well enough considering he was out of position.

  • Sofiane Feghouli
    0

    2.50

    Sofiane Feghouli

In his earlier days at Grenoble big things were expected of Feghouli, and although he has left his injuries behind him, he was non-existent against Swansea. Rarely saw the ball and struggled to make an impact when Valencia attacked.

  • Ever Banega
    0
    2
    2.50

    Ever Banega

For a player of his ability, the mistake leading up to Rami's red card was out of character as he gifted possession to Swansea. On his day he is up there with the best midfielders in Spain, but he looked disinterested against the domineering Canas and De Guzman.

  • Javi Fuego

    1
    2.50

    Javi Fuego

A summer signing from Rayo Vallecano, Fuego has been one of the few positives to Valencia's early season form. The combative midfielder had his work cut out here, though. As Banega tried to push forward, Fuego was outnumbered too often.

  • Federico Nicolás Cartabia

    Federico Nicolás Cartabia

At 20 years old, the highly rated Argentine was making only his second start for Valencia's first team. However, Rami's red card saw his evening cut short as Costa replaced him in the opening 15 minutes.

  • Hélder Postiga
    0
    2
    2.50

    Hélder Postiga

Postiga had a rather thankless task. The service to him was generally dreadful and Chico Flores had him under control without too much bother.

  • Canales
    0
    2
    3.00

    Canales

Began the match brightly as he flashed a ball across the face of Vorm's goal, but after the red card he did very little and struggled to get the better of Rangel. He was not helped by the fact Guardado could rarely get forward to support.

Substitutions

  • Ricardo Costa

    2
    2.50

    Ricardo Costa

Brought on for Cartabia in the first half to compensate for Rami's sent off, but he had a difficult evening. Bony dominated the Portugal defender, whose only real response was to commit fouls.

  • Juan Bernat

    2
    3.00

    Juan Bernat

The young Spaniard was lively on the left when he came on for Canales. He was given 25 minutes to do his damage, but on this showing he should have started.

  • D. Pabón

    2
    3.00

    D. Pabón

Their most expensive signing of the summer, yet he had to accept a place on the bench. Came on for Feghouli with 30 minutes left but did not do much more than the Algerian.

  • Michel Vorm

    1

    Michel Vorm

Generally Vorm did not have much to deal with, but handled everything which came his way with minimal fuss.

  • Jordi Amat
    3

    3.00

    Jordi Amat

One of six Spaniards in Swansea's team, Amat's first return to Spain since leaving in the summer was far more comfortable than he would have expected. Postiga was dealt with well by Chico, leaving the former Rayo Vallecano man to sweep up where necessary.

  • Chico

    3.50

    Chico

Postiga could and should have represented a tricky test for Chico and his team-mates, but the Spaniard put in a good display against him. Valencia's service to the forward was fairly poor, but Chico's pace gave him a huge advantage.

  • Ángel Rangel
    2
    1
    3.00

    Ángel Rangel

A solid display by the right-back. He found himself beaten early on by Canales, but from then on the experienced defender was on top. Eventually he was replaced by Davies.

  • Dwight Tiendalli
    1
    1
    3.50

    Dwight Tiendalli

A mixed bag from Tiendalli. Defensively he was efficient and he was not beaten very often, but when in attack his crossing was very poor.

  • Michu
    5
    0
    4.00

    Michu

After a relatively quiet first half, Michu came to life in the second period. His link-up play with Bony was mostly excellent and the run for his goal was clever. Valencia could do little to keep him in check after half-time.

  • Nathan Dyer
    3
    1
    3.50

    Nathan Dyer

Dyer will likely be the main subject of nightmares for Guardado over the next few nights. He consistently tormented the Mexican and would have finished with an assist if Bony's finishing was better.

  • Jonathan De Guzmán
    2
    1
    3.50

    Jonathan De Guzmán

All-round excellent performance. Drove powerfully from the centre whenever he could, helped counter the threat of Banega and scored a magnificent goal with a free kick.

  • José Cañas
    2
    1
    3.50

    José Cañas

Probably the most understated of Swansea's midfielders and forwards, but no less important. He constantly closed down and hassled Valencia, making tackles here and there. His passing was accurate and he always looked to keep the ball moving.

  • Pozuelo
    3
    1
    4.00

    Pozuelo

Often drifted in and out of the match and sometimes tried too much, but the former Betis man is a joy to watch. His trickery was dazzling, his passing exploitative and his positivity boundless. Grabbed a deserved assist with a delightful pass for Michu.

  • Wilfried Bony
    6

Wilfried Bony Top of the Match

He may not have set the Premier League alight so far, but he showed exactly what he is capable of against Valencia. He bullied Costa and Mathieu after playing a key role in Rami's sending off. The Ivorian held the ball up well and took his goal brilliantly in an unstoppable performance.

Substitutions

  • Ben Davies

    1
    3.00

    Ben Davies

Replaced Rangel in the second period and put in a perfectly comfortable performance without standing out.

  • Jonjo Shelvey

    Jonjo Shelvey

Came on for the final ten minutes or so and apart from a chip from long range, he did nothing noteworthy.

  • Roland Lamah

    3.00

    Roland Lamah

Used his pace and agility well down the left after coming off the bench, but he struggled to get chances to run at his full-back.
