Mohun Bagan 4-0 United SC: Dream debut for Christopher as Mariners sink the Purple Brigade

Mohun Bagan finally returned to winning ways and romped their way through a curiously off colour United SC with skipper Odafa Okolie finally getting that elusive goal...

Mohun Bagan came out strongly from their bad patch as they netted four past an in-form United Sports Club in an I-League match played in the Salt Lake stadium on Friday.

Chistopher Chizoba, the new recruit of the Green and Maroon scored a first half brace in the 20th and 45th minute respectively, while Ram Malik and Odafa Okolie also found their names on the score-sheet, with goals in the 51st and 73rd minutes.

Christopher Chizoba anded a start and was deployed behind Odafa Okolie as the Mariners lined up in a 4-4-1-1 position.

Eelco Schattorie's side came out in a diamond formation (4-1-2-1-2) with Hasan Al Moustafa playing as the defensive midfielder while Eric Brown was to operate at the tip of the midfield.

It was the Purple brigade who tested Sandip Nandy first with a 30 yard effort from Shouvik Chakrabarty.

Bagan's first real move came in the 15th minute when Manish Bhargav's fierce piledriver from just outside the box beat Ishan Debnath in goal but came off the post.

Just five minutes later, Bagan found the back of the net with captain Odafa Okolie playing a pivotal part as he took Deepak Mondal for a ride down the left before finding an unmarked Chizoba just outside the box. With Hasan caught ball watching, Chizoba had enough time to perfectly place his shot past a diving Debnath who should have done better at his near post.

Clearly shaken by the goal, United SC could only shoot from range in their effort to equalise with Eric Brown and CK Vineeth being the culprits.

Although Odafa himself missed a chance from outside the box to smash the ball in after Chizoba had played him on, he made amends in injury time of the first half. He brilliantly shielded the ball from Hasan before turning him with ease to play a lovely through-ball for Chizoba to chase. The Nigerian made no mistake taking the ball away from the diving Debnath before sliding it calmly into the empty net.

It took only five minutes for the home team to get another goal after the break. Odafa intercepted a pass before playing it for Katsumi who strode forward and passed it toRam Malik on the right who placed it brilliantly at the far post, beating Debnath all ends out.

In the 63rd minute, United SC had an opportunity for themselves with K.Asif and Dhanachandra Singh exchanging passes down the left before the full-back found Souvik Chakraborty on the edge of the box but his effort at a volley was nowhere close to troubling Nandy in goal.

United SC came close in the 72nd minute when Bello Rasaq had gone striding forward on the left before putting a lovely cross which Souvik lined up to shoot but his volley was well over the bar from point blank range.

Odafa scored his first goal in the I-League this season when he peeled off his marker at the far post before heading it into the empty net. It all started with Denson Devadas who had found Ram Malik down the right with a brilliant lofted pass and the youngster made no mistake in floating his cross at the far post.

Malik continued his brilliant performance as he once again went striding down the right before finding Odafa with a neat pass whose first shot had too much on it, and allowed Debnath to come out and smother the ball. Deepak Mondal and Odafa crashed into Debnath with the goalkeeper suffering a shin fracture.
