Shillong Lajong - Mohammedan Sporting Preview: Hosts looking for first home win
Thangboi Singto's side will look to overturn their fortunes in Shillong by registering full points against the Kolkata outfit...
Shillong Lajong have surprisingly have had a hundred prevent winning record in their away games this season while have managed just a mere three points from five matches at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Shillong.
And coach Thangboi Singto’s concern wouldn’t be eased as Cornell Glen will miss the second consecutive game after having injured his thigh. Midfielder Taisuke Matsugae too is sidelined for the match with a troubled back problem.
“For a team to lose key players is always difficult. But in team sports you have to do your best with the players you have. That is the plan for us. I’m happy that Glen and Taisuke are improving. For this game they’re highly doubtful, but I believe in the other players we have. Uilliams (Souza Silva) scored one goal in the previous match, which should give him a lot of confidence,” Singto stated in his pre-match address.
Singto mentioned that going into the tie wanting a point isn’t the right mentality and whoever performs well on the day could take the crucial three points. He acknowledged that Mohammedan Sporting have better quality foreign players at their disposal and promised a “good game of football” for the spectators.
“As a team we try to win. We don’t go to the field thinking about a draw. That mindset won’t change. We do respect Mohammedan Sporting but on the field it is 11 against 11 and hopefully the best team on the day wins. The league is quite open at the moment. Mohammedan have come back strongly after their injuries and they have some of the better foreigners in Indian football currently in Josimar and Tolgay Ozbey,” he said.
“We have to keep working hard, keep on improving, especially in our defending and the players know that. Hopefully tomorrow will be a good game of football,” he added.
Meanwhile Mohammmedan Sporting’s confidence has been boosted ever since their 3-0 victory over Shillong’s Rangdajied United close to two weeks back. Since then, they have picked up another four points in two matches. The return of Luciano Sobrosa from an injury has played an important role in the reversal of their fortunes.
In their last game against Sporting Clube de Gpoa, they were lucky to escape with a 3-1 victory given that the Flaming Oranje missed several opportunities to score.
“We started the season with a lot of losses, due to circumstances beyond our control. We lost at least three of our players due to injury after the Durand Cup. As our players came back, gradually, we have been getting better and better,” said Mohammedan coach Bola Masood.
Fans can expect a cracker of an encounter as Lajong and Mohammedan would fight it out for three points on Saturday.
