The Greens bounced back from their defeat to Mohun Bagan and registered crucial three points on Sunday...

Salgaocar FC came back to winning ways as they downed United Sports Club 2-0 at the Kalyani Stadium, Kolkata in a round seven I-League match. Augustin Fernandes (3’) and Milagres Gonsalves (86’) were on the score sheet for the visitors as Salgaocar now have 13 points from six matches while United Sports Club have nine points from six outings.

Eelco Schattorie made three changes from the last game with Sukhen Dey, Snehashish Chakraborty and Mohamed Rafique making into the starting eleven.

Claude Gnakpa was once again left on the bench while Brian Mascarenhas, Augustin Fernandes and Karma Tsewang were included in the first team.

It took just three minutes for the Goan side to find the back of the net when Dhanachandra Singh’s clearance went as far as Augustin Fernandes whose shot rattled the underside of the crossbar, hit goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee before going in.

The home side’s first opportunity came in the 12th minute when Souvik Chakrabarty fed Eric Brown who made space and saw his shot go wide by not much.

Darryl Duffy was denied by an alert Mukherjee by coming off his line to clear after the Scottish striker did well to beat the offside trap and leaving the opposition defenders behind in the 19th minute.

The very next minute he was in the thick of action again as he looked set to go into an one-on-one with the goalkeeper but was clipped inside the box by Anupam Sarkar.

It wasn’t surprising to see Schattorie make the first change with Vineeth coming on for Rafique midway into the first half.

United Sports Club’s defending was atrocious as they let Chika Wali head goalwards from a Gilbert Oliviera corner which Mukherjee just about kept it in.

Souvik was pulling the strings from the midfield but the crossing from the flanks by United Sports Club was poor as they let numerous opportunities pass by.

Around the half hour mark, Mascarenhas went on a solo run before playing it square for Duffy who took too long before attempting to shoot as he was closed down by Snehashish.

Out of nowhere in the 35th minute, Ranti Martins and Brown combined well with the latter finding the back of the net with an outrageous attempt from 30-yards out. Their joy was short-lived as the linesman raised the offside flag much to their disappointment.

Derrick Pereira introduced Claude Gnakpa in the second half as he replaced Brian Mascarenhas. Salgaocar should have doubled their lead had Gilbert not missed a sitter. Duffy and Karma combined with the latter finding Gilbert inside the box but the winger failed to slot it home.

Gnakpa was soon involved in the action as he had a pop on goal with Mukherjee doing enough to avert the danger on second attempt in the 57th minute. A couple of minutes later, Anupam Sarkar conceded possession to Gnakpa and the Frenchman was a tad too late in shooting which allowed Mukherjee to keep his effort out.

Ranti had a couple of half chances with one going agonisingly wide from a bicycle kick.

However all the hopes of United Sports Club making a comeback were quashed as substitute Milagres Gonsalves took a powerful shot after a goof-up by the United defense from a Salgaocar free-kick, which gave Mukherjee no chance whatsoever and doubled the lead for the travellers.

The game ended with the same scoreline as Salgaocar are now level on points with Bengaluru FC.
