Sporting Clube de Goa - Mohammedan Sporting Preview: Bruzon eyeing top spot

With a quiet and steady start in the I-League this season, the Goan side have a chance to lead the standings with a win on Sunday...

Sporting Clube de Goa have collected seven points from their four matches playing away from home, which is by far the best away record in the season, while a third consecutive win after beating Rangdajied United 3-0 on Thursday put them in the top four.

The Flaming Oranje players have been combining well in all departments with a flair of the Spanish touch as far as their passing football is concerned.

Following a 2-0 lead in the first half, it wasn't a surprise that Bruzon asked his side to go easy in the second half against Rangdajied United in order to conserve some energy.

“I don't want to have an excess of happiness. We have a very important game on Sunday. Last season we were working to get out from the relegation area. This season will be fighting for victories only,” he said.

With Gonzalo Hinojal Neila marshalling their back-line and a swarm of in-form midfielders including Jovel Martins, Pratesh Shirodkar, Cajetan Fernandes and Ogba Kalu Nnanna, Sporting Goa look like a stabilised unit who only have to make the best of the goal-scoring chances that come their way.

“The [Mohammedan] game will be a challenge, but one my players are very much looking forward to. We have been improving from game to game and this will be no different,” Bruzon added.

On the other hand, Mohammedan Sporting have been fighting an uphill task with a mere win and a draw in the five matches that they have played this season.

Although the promoted outfit have earned themselves a valuable point against United Sports Club on Thursday, the lack of goals from their strikers is what has hurt the Kolkatan outfit the most with Australian  Tolgay Ozbey been able to net only once while Josimar da Silva Martins has three goals to his name.

Though Mohammedan had signed five IMG-Reliance players on loan, none of them featured in the starting line-up with only Manish Maithani and Luis Barreto making it to the bench against United SC. Masood Bola Aziz, the coach of the Black and Whites, however stressed that only two days of practice was not enough to be ready for first-team action.

"In every aspect we are now working as a team, as a unit. Everybody has to prove himself to get a place in the first team," Masood remained coy, leaving it to be anybody's guess if either of their five new recruits will feature on Sunday.

Sporting Goa's coach however remains well prepared. “I want to test this team against stronger sides and Mohammedan Sporting will be considerably strengthened by the inclusion of the IMG-Reliance players. I don’t want my team to give any excuses,” said Bruzon.
