Player Ratings: Real Madrid 2-0 Malaga

Goal rates the players on show as Willy Caballero puts on a goalkeeping masterclass but still comes up short against Los Blancos

By Martin Macdonald

  • Diego López Rodríguez

    Diego López Rodríguez

Pulled out a solid save early on to deny Portillo but that would be the extent of his goalkeeping contribution to the match. Despite not having too much to do, was off his line quickly to sweep up and distribute play.

  • Pepe
    53
    13
    3.50

    Pepe

Ensured there was no aerial threat whatsoever from Malaga as he continually headed crosses out of the box with authority. Burst out of defence a few times which acted as the catalyst for a few counterattacks.

  • Sergio Ramos
    64
    5
    3.50

    Sergio Ramos

Had his hands full with a buzzing El Hamdaoui as the Moroccan constantly hunted him down looking for possession. Came out second best a few times but ultimately dealt with the Malaga man solidly.

  • Marcelo
    65
    6
    3.50

    Marcelo

Not his most swashbuckling performance down that left-hand side but was still always available to receive the ball in space. Denied a goal by Caballero as his strike from 25 yards was tipped over the bar.

  • Daniel Carvajal
    56
    5
    3.50

    Daniel Carvajal

One of his better performances in a Madrid shirt. Didn't have too much to deal with defensively and had freedom on the overlap as he wasn't tracked by Eliseu. Final ball could have been better but was effective as an extra attacker on the right.

  • Sami Khedira
    62
    10
    4.00

    Sami Khedira

Added another dimension to his game tonight. With Illarramendi sitting deeper he was awarded time to make runs from deep which caused problems for Malaga. Bulldozed his way through midfield a few times and earned free kick in great positions.

  • Ángel Di María
    79
    7
    4.00

    Ángel Di María

Looked the most likely player to make something happen in the first half and was always a threat when cutting inside. Did just that to earn the opening goal as he whipped a cross-come-shot into the far corner.

  • Isco
    57
    10
    3.50

    Isco

Had a quiet opening 20 minutes but came into the game midway through the first half and started to become a threat in the hole. Was given plenty of attention by Tissone and Camacho but shook off tackles constantly to thread incisive passes through the defence.

  • Asier Illarramendi
    53
    11
    3.50

    Asier Illarramendi

Acted as the deep-lying playmaker for Madrid and looked more like the player they brought in from Sociedad. Sprayed the ball about nicely and was always neat in possession. A calming presence in the middle of the park.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo
    124
    13
    3.50

    Cristiano Ronaldo

Had a running feud with Caballero as he was denied by the Malaga goalkeeper's fantastic saves all afternoon. Would have had a hat-trick if not for the Argentine, but eventually got his revenge with an emphatically taken penalty in the last minute to make it 2-0.

  • Morata
    71
    7
    3.50

    Morata

Was caught offside far too many times and needs to learn to time his runs better inside the box. However, was always a threat and held up the ball excellently. Would have got on the scoresheet with a curled strike from the left and a close-range header but for Caballero.

Substitutions

  • Gareth Bale

    Gareth Bale

Looked bright after coming on and earned the penalty which took the game beyond Malaga.

  • Luka Modric
    65
    3

    Luka Modric

Slotted in behind the striker after coming on but didn't have too much time to affect the match.

  • Jesé Rodríguez

    4

    Jesé Rodríguez

    Late change.

  • Willy Caballero
    75
    4
    4.50

Willy Caballero Top of the Match

Was extremely unlucky to be on the losing side as he kept Malaga in with a shout all afternoon with a string of superb saves. Continually denied long-range strikes and set-piece shots with solid, brilliant stops. A truly fantastic performance all-round and could do nothing about either goal.

  • Jesús Gámez
    0
    8
    2.50

    Jesús Gámez

Allowed the ball to float over the top of his head a few times which allowed Ronaldo in behind, but didn't allow him too much room to cut inside and shoot. Earned a booking for a late challenge on Morata on the edge of the box.

  • Weligton
    0
    9
    2.00

    Weligton Flop of the Match

Organised the defence well and was in charge of the wonderfully executed Malaga offside trap which was effective throughout the match. However, gave away the penalty in the last minute when he tripped up Bale inside the box.

  • Antunes
    0
    7
    2.50

    Antunes

Was walking on eggshells for the majority of the match as he was booked early on for a poor challenge on Khedira. Was given very little help by Eliseu in defence and done okay considering he was up against both Di Maria and Carvajal.

  • Eliseu
    3
    7
    2.50

    Eliseu

Spent a large portion of his time on the park on the floor as his play-acting was over-the-top to say the least. Was always looking to get one over on the referee but the official had none of it. Should have equalised for Malaga in the first half but sliced wide from 12 yards out.

  • Sergio Sánchez
    0
    6
    2.50

    Sergio Sánchez

Put his head on balls into the box time and time again and was commanding in the air. Marking was also good as he found himself in the perfect position more than once to get ahead of Ronaldo and Morata to put in last-ditch challenges.

  • Camacho
    0
    6
    2.50

    Camacho

Put in a dogged performance and was always in the face of the Madrid midfield aiming to win back the ball. Put out fires time and time again with important interceptions but did lose the scent of Isco at times, meaning the Madrid man had room to cause danger.

  • Fernando Tissone
    0
    6
    2.50

    Fernando Tissone

Attempted to get his foot on the ball whenever he could to retain possession for Malaga, but found himself continually hounded down by Illarramendi and Khedira. Was neat whenever he did get the ball though, and moved the ball forward nicely at times.

  • Mounir El Hamdaoui
    4
    6
    2.50

    Mounir El Hamdaoui

Put in a great shift up top and was always chasing down lost causes down the channels. Gave Ramos a tough time at points with his relentless running but didn't have any support from team-mates to cause damage.

  • Portillo
    1
    6
    2.00

    Portillo

Was employed down the right-hand side which allowed him to put in a shift defensively and help out Gamez against Ronaldo. Tested the gloves of Diego Lopez with a strike early on but drifted out of the match as time went on and was eventually substituted.

  • Samuel
    0
    6
    2.00

    Samuel

A desperately limp performance saw the Spaniard barely touch the ball during his time on the pitch. This is to be expected against Real Madrid but the work rate wasn't even there as he allowed El Hamdaoui to do all his running.

Substitutions
