Player Ratings: Bayern Munich 3-1 Borussia Monchengladbach

Goal rates the players on show as the Bavarians get their Bundesliga defence off to the perfect start with a win in Pep Guardiola's first competitive game in charge of the club

    Manuel Neuer

The Germany international was not regularly tested, but came up trumps when needed. His reaction save to deny Kruse in the first half was brilliant, but a lack of communication was apparent as Dante netted an own goal.

  • Dante

    Dante

Played with such calmness and composure as he played the ball about excellently from the back. However, his concentration slipped as he turned through his own goal and that seemed to be on his mind for the remainder of the game.

  • Jerome Boateng

    Jerome Boateng

A competent performance in the centre of defence. He did not put a foot wrong and dominated aerially, forcing Gladbach to keep the ball on the deck.

  • Philipp Lahm

    4.00

    Philipp Lahm

A typically adventurous performance from the right-back, who was eager to push on and overload the Gladbach defence. He tucked in when pushing on and put some fantastic deliveries into the area for his team-mates.

  • David Alaba

    David Alaba

Combined with Ribery well down the left and scored a cool penalty. His attacking made Bayern formidable in the final third but the space he left was regularly exploited by Herrmann.

  • Franck Ribéry

Franck Ribéry Top of the Match

Put in a performance that proved he is one of the best in European football. The skill and agility he showed when dribbling was exquisite and after supplying an assist for Robben early on, it was his effort that lead to Mandzukic's goal.

  • Arjen Robben

    Arjen Robben

The Dutchman was lively from the off as he glided past Arango and Daems at will. He opened the scoring with a lovely finish and supplied the cross which led to Mandzukic adding the second in a brilliant outing.

  • Bastian Schweinsteiger
    11

    2.50

    Bastian Schweinsteiger

Played in a very deep role which enabled Kroos, who outshone him, to push on and join the attack. He never really got into a position to contribute meaningfully to Bayern's more positive moments.

  • Toni Kroos

    Toni Kroos

Used his wide array of passing to keep Bayern's momentum flowing in the opposing half. He switched the play with effortless accuracy and was only denied a goal by a brilliant Ter Stegen save in the first half, and then the post after the restart.

  • Mario Mandzukic
    14

    3.50

    Mario Mandzukic

The Croatian was watched closely by Alvaro Dominguez but regularly found space in which he could test Ter Stegen. His goal was perhaps controversial but he displayed the ability to get into dangerous all evening and deserved his goal.

  • Thomas Müller

    Thomas Müller

Found it difficult to find space between the lines as Gladbach defended in numbers. With Alaba and Lahm tucking in it made the area he usually operates in extremely congested. A penalty miss compounded a disappointing evening.

Was given five minutes playing time as Kroos was withdrawn late on.

  • Marc-Andre ter Stegen

    Marc-Andre ter Stegen

The keeper played a part in the concession of the opening goal as his poor clearance handed possession to Bayern. He did somewhat redeem himself, though, with two great saves from Ribery and Mandzukic before keeping Muller's penalty out in the second half.

  • Filip Daems
    2

    2.50

    Filip Daems

Struggled to cope with the lively Robben throughout as the Dutchman had the run of the flank. He still attempted to push on down Gladbach's left and at times this only served to entrench Robben's dominance.

  • Álvaro Domínguez

Álvaro Domínguez Flop of the Match

The Spaniard had a dire game. He was always rushed in possession and continually looked stretched defensively. This was borne out as he conceded two penalties in the second half which enabled the hosts to effectively end the game.

  • Tony Jantschke

    1
    2.50

    Tony Jantschke

Had no response for the quality of Robben, who had the beating of the right-back all evening. He made a couple of vital blocks but his defensive display left a lot to be desired on the whole.

  • Martin Stranzl
    2
    0
    2.50

    Martin Stranzl

The Austrian's lack of pace was clear as he was breezed past by numerous Bayern players time and again. He seemed to be all over the place as Gladbach left wide spaces open for the opposition to run into.

  • Patrick Herrmann
    2
    1
    3.00

    Patrick Herrmann

The wide man was key to some of his side's more dangerous moments in the first half as he used his pace to exploit gaps behind Alaba. He quietened down in the second half as he was forced to help defend against Ribery.

  • Raffael
    3
    0
    3.00

    Raffael

A mixed performance from the Brazilian as he did well to get into some threatening positions but when there he lacked the composure to test Neuer. However, he did link well with his team-mates and passed the ball well.

  • Juan Fernando Arango
    1
    1
    2.50

    Juan Fernando Arango

The Venezuelan failed to track back during the early stages but did so as Robben began to run riot. It was his cross which Dante turned into his own net in the first half but his lack of a defensive contribution left his team exposed.

  • Christoph Kramer
    3
    0
    3.00

    Christoph Kramer

Read the play well in the centre of the park and did his best to break apart the Bayern play. He made a few decent interceptions and worked extremely hard to help protect his team.

  • Granit Xhaka
    1
    1
    2.50

    Granit Xhaka

Could not get his foot on the ball throughout the game and spent much of his time chasing shadows. He was clumsy when going in for a challenge and was incapable of getting himself involved in the action.

  • Max Kruse
    4
    0
    3.00

    Max Kruse

Did not see an awful lot of the ball early on but when he did he utilised it well. Two spectacular efforts, one either side of half time, could have been goals had he not had to face Neuer on the end of them.

Substitutions

  • Amin Younes

  • Branimir Hrgota

    Branimir Hrgota

Came on for Herrmann after 70 minutes but was unable to add anything different to the Gladbach attack.
