Player Ratings: Southampton 1-0 West Brom

Saints march on to victory as heroics from Lallana and Boruc ensure Southampton get back to winning ways and West Brom make a meal of it with new head coach Mel in the stands

    Artur Boruc

Marked his long-awaited return with a flourish, denying Long spectacularly in the dying stages. Capable, as always, when called upon but had very little to do for the most part.

  • Nathaniel Clyne

    Nathaniel Clyne

Often offered an outlet on the right flank but scarcely got the better of Ridgewell.

    Dejan Lovren

Was a rock at the back and did much to justify the plaudits heaped upon him this season.

  • Jose Rocha Fonte

    Jose Rocha Fonte

Worked exceptionally well with his central defensive partner and was rarely troubled. Perhaps a little too ambitious with long balls forward, surrendering possession a number of times.

  • Luke Shaw

    3.50

    Luke Shaw

Struck fear into his marker with intuitive runs and quality delivery. Rarely, if ever, beaten for pace defensively.

  • Morgan Schneiderlin

    Morgan Schneiderlin

Went about his business silently and effectively, towering above Mulumbu in aerial challenges and doing much to help his side's forays forward.

  • Steven Davis

    Steven Davis

Sat back and absorbed pressure well. Rarely ventured forward but didn't need to with Clyne patrolling the right flank.

  • Jack Cork

    Jack Cork

Hardly given the most glamorous of roles but did excellently to win possession was was composed with the ball at his feet. Withdrawn for tactical reasons.

  • Adam Lallana

Adam Lallana Top of the Match

Took his goal superbly to open the scoring. Loitered dangerously in front of the opposition rearguard and his penchant for the spectacular certainly didn't elude him. Was a tricky customer with his mazy runs throughout and caused the opposition rearguard a number of problems.

  • Rickie Lambert
    0
    0
    2.50

    Rickie Lambert

Managed to exploit pockets of space to allow himself sightings of goal but rarely capitalised on decent positions and was let down by some errant finishing.

  • Jay Rodriguez

    0
    3.00

    Jay Rodriguez

Missed a guilt-edged opportunity after the restart and struggled given West Brom's stoicism. As a player who usually thrives off breakaways, he was ultimately let down by his poor finishing.

  • G. Ramírez

    G. Ramírez

Announced himself in style with a superb assist for Lallana's goal. Seized the initiative after replacing the defensively minded Cork and gave his side a noticeable shot in the arm.

  • James Ward-Prowse

    James Ward-Prowse

Was introduced as the game was all but won, so had opportunity to express himself. Acquitted himself well overall, though.

  • Ben Foster

    3.00

    Ben Foster

Could do nothing about Southampton's goal and, in truth, had little to do despite the opponents' time on the ball.

  • Steven Reid

    3.00

    Steven Reid

Rarely provided an option and failed to meet Billy Jones's high standards going forward. Fared relatively well against the combined threat of Shaw and Lambert, however.

  • Jonas Olsson
    0
    0
    3.00

    Jonas Olsson

Organised the defence well and was strong in the air when called upon. Must be given credit given Southampton's offensive firepower, but didn't cover himself in glory after earning a lenient yellow after a dangerous tackle on Lallana.

  • Liam Ridgewell

    3.00

    Liam Ridgewell

Nervous in possession at times in face of Southampton's energetic pressing game but did relatively well defensively.

  • Gareth McAuley

    3.00

    Gareth McAuley

Good last-ditch defending and strong in the air. Formed an accomplished pairing with Olsson, but allowed Lallana space and time for the goal.

  • James Morrison

    0
    2.50

    James Morrison

Had little chance to exhibit his prowess going forward and spent more time helping out the outnumbered Mulumbu.

  • Chris Brunt

    Chris Brunt

Decent delivery from set-pieces but rarely pressed forward.

  • Morgan Amalfitano

    Morgan Amalfitano

Anonymous in the opening stages and made almost no impact on the game.

  • Youssouf Mulumbu

    2.50

    Youssouf Mulumbu

Was the victim of a midfield mismatch and suffered greatly as a result. Sorely missed his usual midfield partner Claudio Yacob and struggled throughout.

  • Shane Long
    0
    0
    2.50

    Shane Long

Missed a golden opportunity in the dying stages to level the score. Shepherded excellently by the opposition rearguard and was caught offside a tad too often. Provided a decent outlet on the break, but his chances were few and far between.

  • Nicolas Anelka

Nicolas Anelka Flop of the Match

Struggling at best, disinterested at worst. Granted, the Frenchman was rarely provided with the service he thrives upon, but he did little to create openings. Spent a great deal of time complaining at team-mates with his hands on his hips.
