Player Ratings: Aston Villa 0-1 Crystal Palace

It was a stalemate in the first-half and even the second, despite chances at both ends of the pitch, but substitute Dwight Gale hit a wonderful winner to record victory for Palace

    Bradley Guzan

Had some decent chances from Palace to save and saw Puncheon fumble on the ball for one of them, giving him chance to position himself and parry the ball away. Could get nowhere near the second which was superbly struck.

    Nathan Baker

Aggressive and strong in the tackle but brought the Palace coaching staff off their feet after his challenge on Jerome, earning him a yellow. Didn't look comfortable with the ball at his feet however.

  • Ciaran Clark

    Ciaran Clark

Perhaps the most experienced of the back-four starting today but didn't stand out. Looked tidy on the ball and controlled the it well but a bit shaky at the back, as the defence were on whole, whenever attacks came down the left.

  • Luna

    Luna

Brought back into left-back after he was dropped in defeat to Stoke, he linked up well on the left-hand side where most of their early play came from. Struggled at times against Bolasie and allowed him to put far too many balls into the box.

  • Matthew Lowton

    Matthew Lowton

Came second best against Puncheon on a number of occasions in the first-half, letting him dart past with ease. Grew intot he game as it progressed and linked up well with Albrighton.

  • Karim El Ahmadi

    Karim El Ahmadi

Filled the role of Ashley Westwood in his absence, he put in some timely challenges on the ball although never really had a foothold on the midfield - but his team didn't either.

  • Marc Albrighton

    Marc Albrighton

Lively into the game and made some bright runs as he looked to find the cross, but, as positive as his play was, he didn’t always play the right ball. Direct and made a real impact in their strong spell at the start of the second-half.

  • Fabian Delph

    Fabian Delph

Returned from his one-match suspension but, despite trying, he dwelled on the ball far too long at times which he couldn't do against a five-man midfield. Settled into his game as it grew but then backed off Gayle for his goal.

  • Andreas Weimann

Andreas Weimann Flop of the Match

Fffered effort without ever making an impact but later presented with a fine chance from a Delph pass only to scuff his shot, then hit another glorious chance over the bar. Missed the best two chances, which was costly. Later taken off.

  • Gabriel Agbonlahor

    2.50

    Gabriel Agbonlahor

Drifted towards the wings going forward and looked the most likely to make something happen, but didn't see the ball when on the back foot. Lost his role in the second-half as well but got into the right positions.

  • Libor Kozák

    0
    2.00

    Libor Kozák

Never the most mobile but did win a number of aerial challenges for his teammates to latch onto. Had a fine chance to set his teammates up after Delaney mistimed the flight of the path but played it to nobody. Later taken off.

Substitutions

    Leandro Bacuna

Entered the game in place of Luna in a straight swap at left-back, probably to offer more strength against the runs of Bolasie. Gave away a foul against him straight away but that threat did wean as the game went on.

  • Alexandar Tonev

Made his way onto the pitch late on in place of Weimann.

    Jordan Nathaniel Bowery

Brought on in place of Kozak late on in a straight swap and saw his late header tipped just over the bar by Speroni.

  • Julian Speroni

    Julian Speroni

Should have been tested more, particularly with Weimann's effort on goal but was fortunate he scuffed his shot into the ground and straight at him. Didn't have many worries otherwise against the lowest scorers at home.

  • Joel Ward

    2.50

    Joel Ward

Played in midfield alongside Bannan and worked hard for his side, covering ground well. Like Jedinak, he seemed suited to the midfield battle.

  • Adrian Mariappa

    Adrian Mariappa

Had a bit to deal with down the right early on but coped well and looked strong in the challenge. He wasn't afraid to venture forward either, which was encouraging, and in the second-half the threat was nulified against Agbonlahor who faded.

  • Danny Gabbidon

    Danny Gabbidon

One of two central defenders who could have seen their errors lead to goals when he slipped on the ball high up, but Kozak was too slow to break away. In general, formed a strong back-four, particularly with the ball in the box.

  • Damien Delaney

    3.00

    Damien Delaney

Nearly made to pay for mistiming the ball but was let off the hook by Kozak who again couldn't capitalize. Put his body in the way a number of times and made some timely aerial headers.

  • Jonathan Parr

    2.50

    Jonathan Parr

Replaced Moxey at left-back and had a decent all-round game with Albrighton his main threat throughout.

  • Yannick Bolasie

    Yannick Bolasie

In for the suspended Marouane Chamakh and it was an interesting match-up against Luna, who he ran at throughout the game. Looked lively and a handful as a result, laying on their best two chances of the game, both spurned.

  • Jason Puncheon

    3.00

    Jason Puncheon

Hopped past Lowton as it he wasn't there at times, making runs down the line and cutting inside. Had the perfect chance to open the scoring but trod on the ball in his shot and then had a similar chance on goal missed before taken off.

  • Mile Jedinak

    3.50

    Mile Jedinak

Provided good balance to his side and was perfectly suited to these sorts of games, slipping in behind the midfield and offering protection to the back four. Strong in the tackle and his positioning was always good.

  • Barry Bannan

Barry Bannan Top of the Match

Returned to the club he graduated at and always showed for the ball while making a positive contribution at both ends of the pitch. Nearly found the net too but saw his shot tipped onto the post by the gloves of Guzan in goal. Fine display.

  • Cameron Jerome

    2.50

    Cameron Jerome

Got himself into some decent positions inside the box but was never found, but created space for his teammates as he pulled defenders away. Didn't ever challenge himself however and was later taken off for Gayle.

Substitutions

  • Dean Moxey

The final substitution for his side late on in the game in place of Bannan.

  • Jonathan Williams

    Jonathan Williams

Brought on for Puncheon midway through the second-half, which, despite his misses, was surprising given his contributions to the game. But he helped out defensively and the midfield looked more stable as a result.

  • Dwight Gayle

    3.50

    Dwight Gayle

Entered the game as a second-half substitute in place of Jerome with just over 20 minutes of normal time remaining. Looked like he wasn't going to make an impact but then hit a wonderful strike on goal for the winner in the last minute.
