Player Ratings: Aston Villa 2-0 Cardiff

Two second-half goals for the home side, courtesy of a fine free kick from Leandro Bacuna and a cushioned header from Libor Kozak, gave Paul Lambert his first win in five

Didn't have anything testing to save in either half as his defence did the job for him in front.

    Nathan Baker

Looked a little clumsy at times, naively cutting across Odemwingie for a cheap foul. Brave in the header, as always.

Strong positioning and got himself in the way of a number of balls into the box.

    Ciaran Clark

Slotted in at left-back with two injuries in this position and looked alert defensively, containing the threat down the left and handling Odemwingie well too.

Leandro Bacuna Top of the Match

Started slowly and didn't get into the game until the second half when he began to place some decent crosses into the box. Progressively got better as the game went on and ended the game in midfield as he struck a terrific free kick past the rooted Marshall in goal.

    Karim El Ahmadi

Filled in the middle with Fabian Delph out injured and covered ground well. Gave away certain fouls too cheaply but a long-range shot whistled only narrowly wide of the post. Later taken off.

    Ashley Westwood

Tidy in midfield but still didn't have that stronghold on the game that he used to have for his side last season. Hit a flying shot from deep after the ball fell kindly to him.

    Yacouba Sylla

Played a couple of long direct balls that always didn't come off but gave his side added bulk in midfield and wasn't afraid to throw his weight around.

    Alexandar Tonev

Still looked fragile. Looked better on the left when he was allowed to cross but an attempted back-flick early on that caught his trailing leg summed up his day. Too eager to score from distance and missed an easy through ball to Benteke. Redeemed himself by firing in the cross that helped set up their second.

    C. Benteke

Looked back to his confident self with strong hold-up play and positive movement. Had an early shot tipped wide by the fingertips of Marshall but missed a free header which is unlike him when he's on form.

    Libor Kozák

Made his second start with the Belgian in the league this season and started brightly. Nearly scored an own goal with a header and should have headed in for his own side in the second half. But eventually found the net just yards out with a header he couldn't miss. He was always a threat.

    Matthew Lowton

Ironic cheers from home fans as he made his way onto the pitch in place of El Ahmadi in the second period. Nodded the ball back for their second after getting himself in an advanced position.

    Jordan Nathaniel Bowery

Came on with not long left in the game in place of Kozak, who left to a standing ovation. Could have squared to Benteke but took a shot on goal instead.

  • David Marshall

    David Marshall

Did well to stretch across his goal and tip Benteke's deflected shot wide of the post and was not troubled by a couple of other long-range strikes. Rooted to the spot for Bacuna's goal, which dipped too perfectly for him to get to.

  • Andrew Taylor

    Andrew Taylor

Looked comfortable on the ball going forward and was happy to drift inside as well - but didn't do enough to stop the assist for the second goal, which Lowton nodded back.

  • Steven Caulker

    Steven Caulker

Last weekend's match-winner started in similar form to his last game with a fine interception against Benteke and an attack at the other end minutes later. Good covering for his defensive partner and quick to the ball. Unlucky to be on the losing side.

  • Ben Turner

    Ben Turner

Appeared to look jaded and was slower to the ball than Benteke early on.

    Kevin Theophile Catherine

Caught out of position on occassion and looked weak against Tonev - arguably the lightest player on the pitch - when he easily brushed past him for a cross. Started to get the better of him later in the game.

  • Peter Whittingham

    Peter Whittingham

Didn't make the most of his set-pieces into the box, especially given Villa's frail defending from dead balls.

    Gary Medel

Seemed to pick up a slight head injury after a collision with Caulker but stayed on, although this wasn't the game for him to have much of an influence when sitting deep in midfield.

    Aron Einar Gunnarsson

Just the one change from the side that beat Swansea last weekend but didn't have much of an influence and was later replaced by the man he started in place of: Mutch.

    Don Cowie

Strong work-rate and pushed Clark into some errors on the right in the second half. Worked hard but didn't create enough going forward.

  • Peter Odemwingie

Peter Odemwingie Flop of the Match

Too casual at times, taking his time in possession to allow a chasing defender an easy tackle on him and an awkward back-flick failed to pay off.

  • Craig Bellamy

    Craig Bellamy

Threaded some positve through-balls from the left but didn't have the usual energy and tenacity he normally brings. Eventually taken off for Maynard.

Came on for Odemwingie ten minutes into the second half but looked a little lightweight when challenged, despite making some good movement.

    Nicky Maynard

Used as the final substitution by Mackay in place of Bellamy when his side were 1-0 down. Knocked into the advertising boards with his first action and angrily threw the ball away.
