Player Ratings: Liverpool 4-1 West Bromwich Albion

Luis Suarez inspired the Reds to a comfortable win as his treble and Daniel Sturridge's exquisite chip saw off the plucky Baggies, despite James Morrison's late consolation

    Simon Mignolet

A quiet afternoon on the whole for the Reds stopper but some of his decision-making from West Brom corners was questionable to say the least. His distribution was markedly improved. Had no chance with Morrison's penalty but denied substitute Brunt brilliantly.

  • Glen Johnson
    23

    3.00

    Glen Johnson

Constant outlet for the Reds down the right and his final delivery was always a dangerous one for his attackers to meet in the centre. Was efficient in getting up and down the flank to attack and defend in equal measure.

  • Kolo Toure

    Kolo Toure

Composed display from the Ivorian, who embraced the physical tussle with Anichebe and constantly looked to drive out of the back four with the ball to get his side going.

  • Mamadou Sakho

    Mamadou Sakho

Has struggled at times since his move but oozed confidence and showed a good understanding with Cissokho on the left-hand side. Was strong in the tackle and in the air.

  • Aly Cissokho

    Aly Cissokho

Like Johnson on the other side, always looked to get forward and deliver the ammunition for Sturridge and Suarez to capitalise on in attacking areas. It worked, as his cross led to Suarez's sublime headed goal.

  • Martin Skrtel

    Martin Skrtel

Looked shaky on occasions, particularly when he allowed Anelka to slip away and get a shot off on goal but his resilience throughout the game was perfectly summed up by the way he recovered from that gaffe to clear the ball off the line.

  • Steven Gerrard

    Steven Gerrard

Never wasted the ball but was responsible in the way he conducted proceedings from midfield. Allowed Henderson to get closer to the front two and was content to sit and spray passes around. Great display capped off by a stunning ball for Suarez's third.

  • Jordan Henderson

    Jordan Henderson

Looked to be spurred on by Sir Alex Ferguson's comments on him as he ran the show in midfield. Showed neat touches and a good awareness of those around him but it was the way he constantly demanded possession that caught the eye most.

  • Lucas Leiva

    Lucas Leiva

Came back into the first-team fold and slotted back into his defensive midfield role seamlessly. Hassled and harried the Baggies on the ball and was always available in front of the back four. Was unfortunate to be penalised for West Brom's lifeline from the penalty spot.

  • Luis Suárez

Luis Suárez Top of the Match

What more can you say about this magician? Scored a hat-trick of the highest order, if not quite the perfect blend of left-foot, right-foot and a header, and tormented a West Brom defence that looked frightened whenever he took the ball on in the final third. The Uruguayan was a joy to behold.

  • Daniel Sturridge
    50

    Daniel Sturridge

His thunder may have been stolen somewhat by Suarez's masterclass, but the other half of the 'SAS' strikeforce was equally as effective. His runs dragged Jonas Olsson and Gareth McAuley all over the place and he deserved his late goal, which was superbly taken.

Substitutions

  • Martin Kelly

    Martin Kelly

Came on for the tireless Johnson and was steady if not spectacular as he stuck to the defensive side of the game rather than over-committing.

  • Joe Allen

    Joe Allen

Came on for the final five minutes and did not have a telling impact on the game.

  • Luis Alberto

    Luis Alberto

Came on for Suarez to ensure a rapturous reception for the frontman after his hat-trick. Barely touched the ball.

    B. Myhill

Could do nothing about the exceptional Suarez goals nor Sturridge's sumptuous chip and otherwise had very little to do in terms of saves. Could only stand and watch an outstanding display of finishing but did produce two clever late stops to foil Suarez.

  • Jonas Olsson
    2
    2
    2.50

    Jonas Olsson

Was not especially at fault for the first goal, merely undone by the audacious Suarez nutmeg that sent the Reds forward through on goal. Struggled with the constant movement up front but it would be naive to suggest it was all down to the Baggies skipper.

  • Liam Ridgewell

    Liam Ridgewell

Could not adjust to Liverpool's unorthodox formation and was pegged back by Johnson's penetrative runs out wide. Offered very little going forward in the opening stages but became more confident as the match wore on.

  • Gareth McAuley
    1
    2
    2.50

    Gareth McAuley

Survived an early penalty shout but was outclassed by Suarez on a day to forget for the Northern Ireland international who scored on this ground in the 2-0 win last year but was too busy defensively to worry about anything in the opposition area.

  • Billy Jones
    1
    2
    2.50

    Billy Jones

The combative and energetic right-back was out of sorts mainly down to Suarez's display but also Cissokho's constant running down the left wing. Was quiet going forward early on but his adventure in the second half helped earn a spot-kick for his side.

  • Claudio Yacob
    1
    2
    2.50

    Claudio Yacob

By his high standards, the midfield enforcer will be disappointed by his display. Failed to get close to midfield runners and was perplexed by the way Suarez looked to drop deep at each opportunity.

  • Morgan Amalfitano

    1
    2.50

    Morgan Amalfitano

Was not as effective as in his showing at Old Trafford but showed some positivity in getting forward and supporting Anichebe early on. Was forced off due to injury prior to the interval.

  • Youssouf Mulumbu

    2
    3.00

    Youssouf Mulumbu

Could not get close enough to any of the Reds' forwards but was a strong presence in possession. Should have had an assist but for Anelka's profligacy.

  • Stéphane Sessegnon
    1
    1
    3.50

    Stéphane Sessegnon

The most impressive Baggies performer on a day largely to forget. Kept going up until the final whistle as he tried every trick in the book to beat off the attentions of those trying to shackle him.

  • Victor Anichebe
    3
    2
    2.00

    Victor Anichebe

Completely anonymous. Every time the ball came near him, he was robbed of it by Liverpool's hungry defenders but, in fairness, the service into feet was not up to scratch from his team-mates.

  • Nicolas Anelka
    3
    1
    2.00

Nicolas Anelka Flop of the Match

Was wasteful with his final ball and looked dreadfully lethargic throughout the contest. Missed two glorious opportunities to get his side back into it, too.

Substitutions

  • James Morrison
    1
    1
    3.00

    James Morrison

Had done little to nothing after coming on for Amalfitano until he stroked home a penalty with consummate ease.

  • Chris Brunt
    1
    1
    2.50

    Chris Brunt

Was extremely quiet when he emerged from the bench, failing to offer the natural width his manager sought to get back into the game.

  • Shane Long
    1
    1
    3.00

    Shane Long

Thrown on in a desperate attempt to inject some pace up front and he ran the channels well during his time on the pitch but could not really put a stamp on proceedings.
