The City goalkeeper was surprisingly picked to start ahead of Costel Pantilimon and had little to do until Watson's late winner.
Flop of the Match
The Frenchman had an awful afternoon up against McManaman and never got to grips with the Wigan midfielder's trickery. Also offered next to nothing in attack.
An assured display from the central defender as he took up good positions to deal with the pace and power of Kone.
Sent off in the second half for a second booking, both reckless tackles on McManaman. Made his customary lung-busting runs down the right touchline but mistimed tackles showed he was off the pace of the game.
A powerful performance from the City captain up against Kone but he could do nothing as Watson glanced home the winning goal.
Pushed and prompted from attacking positions in between the lines but was never able to open up the Latics' defence apart from one occasion in the first-half when he set up Tevez.
An assured performance as he sat in front of the back four and looked to start City attacks, but was sometimes bypassed in midfield by Wigan's brisk passing and movement.
Tested Robles with one powerful strike in the first half but was otherwise anonymous before being replaced by Milner in the 54th minute.
So important for City in big matches in the past, but the Ivorian had a quiet afternoon and was never able to impose his authority on the game.
Lively display from the Argentine as he tried to link up City's attacking play and caused Wigan problems as he took up positions between the lines. Should have scored in the 29th minute but was denied by Robles' legs and was surprisingly substituted in the 69th minute.
The Argentine worked hard to make runs in between the Wigan defenders but never had a real sight on goal. Maybe unfortunate not to win a penalty in the second half when he went down under a challenge from Scharner.
Replaced Nasri in the 55th minute, providing genuine width on the right but having little impact on the game.
Replaced Tevez in the 69th minute and did little of note.
Came on as a very late substitute after Wigan had taken the lead and did not touch the ball.
Kept his side in the game with some excellent stops, especially in the first half as he thwarted efforts from Yaya Toure and Tevez.
Solid performance from the Paraguayan centre-back as he stuck close to Aguero and denied the City striker space in the final third.
The Wigan captain coped well with the threat from City's right, particularly in one-on-one situations up against Nasri as he used his power and strength.
A tidy and efficient performance as he hassled and harried the City midfielders and kept his passing simple when in possession.
A classy display from the central midfielder that showed why he has attracted interest from some of the big English clubs. Very intelligent defensive positioning and incisive passing.
Showed glimpses of his quality but seemed slightly overwhelmed by the occasion before making way for Watson nine minutes from time.
Generally strong as Wigan nullified City's attacking threat. Rarely ventured forward but covered well for his central defenders, despite being fortunate in the second half when he appeared to bring down Aguero.
Offered excellent width and balance on the left side, although he appeared to tire as the game wore on.
Provided an excellent attacking outlet with his endless running, pace and power to stretch the City defence.
Top of the Match
A superb performance from the youngster as City failed to handle his movement and trickery. Had Clichy on toast and almost scored in the first half but curled his shot just wide of the far post.
Always posed problems with his delivery from set-pieces - and he delivered the corner from which Watson headed home the winner. Had previously hit the crossbar with a free kick and linked up well with McManaman and Kone.
Replaced Gomez nine minutes from time had popped up with the dramatic late winner with a fine glancing header from Maloney's corner.
