    Artur

Rushed off his line well to thwart Cisse twice early on but was eventually beaten by Newcastle's No.9 after a decent move down the right. Renewed his battle with the striker later on by tipping a deflected shot onto the post.

  • Luisao

    Luisao

Struggled with the pace of Cisse when Newcastle attacked. Tamely appealed for offside in the 46th minute after being caught out as Marveaux slipped a neat pass through to Cisse, from which the striker hit the post.

  • Ezequiel Garay

    Ezequiel Garay

Happy to start attacks from defence for Benfica, as he showed an impressive range of passing. Like Luisao, he failed to deal with Cisse's pace on a couple of occasions as the striker raced through on goal.

  • L. Melgarejo

    L. Melgarejo

Caught out defensively by the movement of Cisse and Sissoko, particularly for Newcastle's opening goal. Much more comfortable going forward.

  • Osvaldo Nicolás Fabián Gaitán

    Osvaldo Nicolás Fabián Gaitán

Forced Krul into making two great saves in the first half. Linked well with Cardozo and Rodrigo in an attacking three for the home side.

    Nemanja Matić

The former Chelsea midfielder was very solid in the centre of the park for the hosts. He broke up a number of promising Newcastle moves and played some probing passes forward.

    André Almeida

Showed great energy to push forward from right-back again and again. His dynamism helped his team greatly as it limited the attacking threat of Santon.

  • André Gomes

    André Gomes

The youngster was a surprise inclusion but he repaid the faith shown in him by his manager by putting in an accomplished performance. Flashed a shot wide from 20 yards in the ninth minute after brushing off a challenge from Santon.

  • Ó. Cardozo

    Ó. Cardozo

Produced a couple of moments of magic before the break, one of which led to Benfica's equaliser. His devilish strike from 25 yards was parried into the path of Rodrigo who tucked home the rebound. Subbed off late on.

  • Ola John

    Ola John

Demonstrated his blistering pace on a couple of occasions in, though his end product was lacking at times. Had one shot saved well by the legs of Krul after cutting in from the right.

  • Rodrigo

    Rodrigo Top of the Match

Sat in the space between the Newcastle midfield and defence in the first half, which allowed him room to dictate some moves for his side. Prodded home Benfica's equaliser and also forced Krul into making two brilliant saves. Made way for Lima in the second half.

Introduced with 13 minutes to go as Jesus looked to shore up his defence after his side had gone 3-1 up.

    Enzo Nicolás Pérez

Replaced Gomes on the hour mark and showed some neat touches in midfield for the hosts.

    Lima

Brought on in the second half as Benfica searched for a winner and had an instant impact as he took Santon's back pass in his stride and swept a shot past Krul to make it 2-1.

  • Tim Krul

    3.50

    Tim Krul

Produced a handful of fine saves in the first half to keep out Gaitan, Cardozo and John. Could do little about Benfica's three goals, particularly Lima's opportunist effort and Cardozo's penalty.

  • Davide Santon

Davide Santon Flop of the Match

The Italian full-back was pegged back for large parts of the first half as Benfica's right-hand side impressed. Gifted Benfica their second goal after playing a wayward back pass straight to Lima and the striker swept a shot past Krul.

  • Danny Simpson

    Danny Simpson

Provided a stunning pass to Sissoko, who then crossed for Cisse to score the opening goal in the 13th minute. Conceded a very dangerous free kick at the end of the first half for a foul on Rodrigo.

    Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa

Was calm at centre-back for the Magpies but should have done better for Benfica's goal as he was beaten to the ball by Rodrigo.

  • James Perch

    2.00

    James Perch

Was booked for a silly sliding tackle on Gaitan in the 18th minute and looked out of his depth against the likes of Rodrigo and Matic. Picked up an injury in the second half and was replaced by Anita.

  • Steven Taylor

    2.50

    Steven Taylor

Dominant in the air but his mobility was shown up on a couple of occasions by the trickery of Cardozo and Rodrigo. Handled the ball inside his own area which resulted in a penalty and in turn Benfica's third goal.

  • Yohan Cabaye

    Yohan Cabaye

The Frenchman was tidy in possession without producing the kind of creativity expected of him. Did not look comfortable being dragged back to defend as Benfica grew in confidence.

  • Moussa Sissoko

    3.00

    Moussa Sissoko

Grabbed the assist for Cisse's goal after latching on to Simpson's fine pass and bending a brilliant cross to the striker. Pulled Melgarejo and Garay out of position to create space for Cisse on a number of occasions. Quiet after the break.

  • Jonas Gutierrez

    Jonas Gutierrez

Industrious as ever for the Magpies in midfield. The Argentine created a decent chance for Cisse in the first half that was tipped onto the post by Artur.

  • Sylvain Marveaux

    3.50

    Sylvain Marveaux

Played a couple of scything passes through the Benfica defence, including a fabulous one just after the break that put Cisse clean through. The midfielder used the ball intelligently and troubled the home side throughout.

  • Papiss Cissé

    3.50

    Papiss Cissé

Showed a heavy touch once or twice early on but made amends for that by getting the vital touch to Sissoko's cross in the 13th minute to make it 1-0. Unlucky to hit the post either side of half-time.
