Player Ratings: Blackburn 0-1 Millwall

Kenny Jacket's men progress to the FA Cup semi-finals where they will face Roberto Martinez's Wigan at Wembley thanks to Danny Shittu's excellent first-half header

    Jake Kean

Did not have much to deal with in terms of shots but had plenty of crosses to halt and he fairly well with most of them, collecting with ease. Beaten by Shittu's header late on in the first half but there was little that he could have done to prevent it.

  • Martin Olsson

    Martin Olsson

Contributed almost nothing on the left wing in the first half and, on the rare occasions on which he tried to take on Dunne, the defender stole the ball from him with ease. Blackburn's apparent reluctance to use him disappeared slightly for the second half but he was not much more effective.

  • Scott Dann

    Scott Dann

Battered and bruised from the meeting at the weekend, so much so that part of his face was actually yellow. Nonetheless, his battle scars did not seem to be affecting his play as he put in a decent shift, keeping Hulse at arm's length throughout.

  • Grant Hanley

    Grant Hanley

The young defender put in a strong performance when the two sides last faced each other and he had a good game again. Hulse offered little threat but N'Guessan threatened. Nevertheless, Hanley did well to nullify the attacker's influence.

  • David Dunn

    David Dunn

Hardly given the ball in the first half, which coincided with Blackburn showing very little in attack. Those two facts were definitely related as he was much more integrated in the second half, while Blackburn were more threatening. His passing was accurate and he looked to be the hosts' only creative influence in the centre.

  • Jason Lowe

    Jason Lowe

With Dunn and the quiet Pedersen given the creative responsibilities, Lowe acted as the ball-winner in midfield and did a decent job. Some of his challenges were a bit rash, particularly one on Taylor in the first half but many were clean and he halted several attacks at critical stages.

  • Morten-Gamst Pedersen

    1.50

    Morten-Gamst Pedersen

One of the more experienced players in an otherwise young side but was very quiet. Most of his involvement was restricted to playing short, simple passes which did not offer much risk.

  • Marcus Olsson

    Marcus Olsson

Usually a very attack-minded full-back and sometimes deployed as a winger but against Millwall he was just about anonymous. The Swede hardly left his own half despite few of the visitors' attacks coming down his side and he was replaced at half-time for Nuno Gomes.

  • Joshua King

    Joshua King

Showed flashes of his quality, including a number of clever runs with the ball, but ultimately his passing let him down when it mattered most. Looked Blackburn's most likely source of a goal early on in the second half, but was later replaced by Forrester. The former Manchester United man should have been booked for a blatant dive, too.

  • Jordan Rhodes

Jordan Rhodes Flop of the Match

The Scotland international was barely noticeable on the night. A defensive error almost presented him with a chance towards the beginning of the match, but thereafter he was extremely quiet.

  • Leon Best

    2.00

    Leon Best

Produced quality in bursts at Ewood Park. Did well to create space for himself and then shoot in the first 15 minutes but then disappeared for the rest of the first half until allowing Shittu an easy header for the defender's goal. Almost redeemed himself after the break with a good run and shot, but Lowry cleared his effort off the line.

Substitutions

  • Anton Forrester

    Anton Forrester

Came on for his debut after joining on loan from Everton but he had next to no impact

  • Nuno Gomes

    Nuno Gomes

A Portugal international in his day and a veteran of World Cups and European Championships but he was unable to inspire Blackburn after coming on for Marcus Olsson at half-time.

  • David Forde

    David Forde

Despite Blackburn generally controlling possession, they created precious little in front of goal, giving Forde a pretty comfortable evening. Beaten once when Best put a shot past him but bailed out by Lowry.

  • Alan Dunne

    Alan Dunne

The Olsson twins started on Blackburn's left, no doubt giving Dunne the expectation that he would be in for a tough evening. That was not really how it turned out, however. The right-back dealt very well with Martin, while Marcus seemed reluctant to roam forward perhaps as often as usual.

  • Danny Shittu

Danny Shittu Top of the Match

Apart from a few early moments when Rhodes and Best threatened, Shittu bossed the majority of proceedings. The Nigerian stepped out of defence well, won virtually every aerial battle and gave Millwall the win with a powerful header.

  • Jack Smith

    2.50

    Jack Smith

The defensive shield in midfield, Smith spent a lot of his time following Dunn around. However, for large parts of the match, Blackburn were so poor in possession that Dunn had little influence, meaning that Smith did not have much to do.

  • Mark Beevers

    Mark Beevers

Played a few wayward passes at the back and allowed Rhodes space during the opening moments but grew as the match went on and generally put up a good fight against the Scot and Best. Received a booking late on.

  • Shane Lowry

    Shane Lowry

Starting his fourth consecutive match, the Australian lined up on the left of the defence against livewire Joshua King. When the Norwegian looked to run with the ball, Lowry found his speed tough to deal with. However, Blackburn's distribution to their forwards players was awful at times, meaning Lowry was given a helping hand. Saved Millwall with a crucial goal-line clearance.

  • Chris Taylor

    Chris Taylor

A knee ligament injury caused Taylor to miss previous FA Cup rounds this season, but he certainly showed glimpses of what they had been missing. When not in possession he was quick to hassle opponents, particularly David Dunn, while he looked dangerous on the ball going forward.

  • Dany N'Guessan
    0

    2.00

    Dany N'Guessan

Unsurprisingly, Millwall looked to capitalise on N'Guessan's supreme physicality and strength at every given opportunity, lofting the ball towards him on numerous occasions. However, Blackburn were generally wise to the visitors' plans and they marshaled the big man well.

  • Liam Trotter

    3.00

    Liam Trotter

An unspectacular performance from Trotter but he did his job well enough, helping out with defensive and attacking responsibilities. His passing to the forward players was accurate and he looked very comfortable on the ball, holding it up well.

  • Andy Keogh

    2.50

    Andy Keogh

The Irishman found himself involved in a number of scuffles when these sides played each other at the weekend and, despite a wild tackle on Dunn in the first 20 minutes, he was fairly muted. In terms of his effectiveness on the ball, he did not see a great deal of possession but put in a number of good crosses and passed well.

  • Rob Hulse
    0
    0
    1.50

    Rob Hulse

Experienced forward Rob Hulse struggled to make an impact for Kenny Jacket's men, mostly just throwing his weight about to make life difficult for Dann and Hanley. The former Sheffield United man often looked isolated before being replaced by Marquis.

Substitutions

  • John Marquis

    John Marquis

Replaced Hulse in the dying moments, probably as a way to waste time and he had a quiet few minutes.
