Southern Samity were helped by a late winner from Francis Onyeama in their 2-1 victory over Mumbai Tigers FC in the last match of the Group C preliminary rounds played at Bangalore, on Wednesday.
Mumbai Tigers head coach Mahesh Lotlikar, as expected, started with Mohammed Rafi and Paresh Shivalkar on the bench. Samity's Sovan Chakraborty opened the scoring. The lead was however later cancelled after Shivalkar and Bikash Jairu combined well to set-up substitute Rafi, who didn't disappoint.
With five minutes of regulation time left on the clock, Onyeama rose above the rest of the pack to head home. In what could have been a second equaliser, Rafi's header on target from a Shivalkar cross was tipped over the bar by goalkeeper Naseem Akhtar to dash Vasco's hopes of qualification.
Souther Samity, hence with 17 points from seven matches topped the group. Mumbai Tigers and Vasco SC were tied on second place, with 16 points each, but the Mumbai-based team had alread beaten the Goans 1-0 earlier in the group to advance from the group due to a better head-to-head record.
In the other match of the day, Eagles FC and Hindustan FC played out a 2-2 draw. Rino Antao and T.S. Shateesan scored for the Kerala outfit, while Andrea Silva and Mahener Singh found the back of the net for Hindustan FC.
