Player Ratings: Manchester United 2-2 Chelsea

Eden Hazard and Ramires stun Old Trafford as the Blues come from two goals down to force an FA Cup quarter-final replay following Chicharito and Wayne Rooney strikes

By Jeremy Butler at Old Trafford

  • David de Gea

David de Gea Top of the Match

Was alert to stop a dipping shot from Luiz but could do little to prevent Hazard's perfect strike bending in the top corner and could only watch Ramires' equaliser fly past him. Showed his class though to deny Mata's last minute strike.

  • Jonny Evans
    37
    49
    3.00

    Jonny Evans

Three powerful headers kept Chelsea at bay just when they threatened to fightback from their awful opening and was commanding when Chelsea threw the kitchen sink at United in search of a winner.

  • Patrice Evra
    26
    63
    2.50

    Patrice Evra

Penned back by Moses' desire to gallop down his flank and Mata's ability to thread passes in behind him. Subdued performance, but with United grabbing a two goal lead so early there was no need to take risks.

  • Rio Ferdinand
    47
    54
    3.00

    Rio Ferdinand

Composed on the ball and quick into the tackle. Nothing fancy in this display in front of watching England boss Roy Hodgson. Could he be in line for a recall? Certainly looked more authoritative in his play than Gary Cahill.

  • Rafael
    34
    55
    3.00

    Rafael

Found it hard to contain Hazard when he came on as a sub and rarely launched his flying raids down the right flank. Nothing flash from the Brazilian, and was overwhelmed by Chelsea's late push.

  • Michael Carrick
    54
    43
    3.50

    Michael Carrick

He's not quite in the Scholes class but Carrick now runs the United midfield brilliantly. He set United on their way with a typical precision pass for Hernandez to nod in the opener and never misplaced a ball.

  • Nani
    39
    55
    2.50

    Nani

Was keen to put his Real Madrid nightmare behind him and started well, winning the free-kick from which Rooney scored the second. Limped off before the break though to end a bad week on a low.

  • Tom Cleverley
    28
    84
    2.00

Tom Cleverley Flop of the Match

Looks a shadow of the player who burst onto the England scene in the autumn. Lost possession too easily and never attempted a penetrating pass. Should be left out of next Three Lions squad.

  • Javier Hernández
    49
    46
    3.00

    Javier Hernández

The Mexican has a happy habit of scoring against Chelsea and he did not wait long to carry on his run. His fifth minute opener was taken with the skill of a supreme marksman.

  • Shinji Kagawa
    45
    72
    2.00

    Shinji Kagawa

Where was the guy that scored a hat-trick here last time out? Rarely made those forward runs that bamboozled Norwich in his last game and lost control when bullied by Chelsea's big midfielders.

  • Wayne Rooney
    66
    53
    3.00

    Wayne Rooney

Rooney is deadly at Old Trafford at the moment with seven goals in his last eight games. None were as fortunate as his free-kick here that was actually a cross. Responded well to speculation about his future but should have netted second.

Substitutions

  • Antonio Valencia

    Antonio Valencia

On for Nani before the break but his quality of crossing is letting his game down.

  • Danny Welbeck
    32
    63
    2.50

    Danny Welbeck

Asked to run from deep when coming on as a sub but was unable to get into the game.

  • Robin van Persie
    32
    72
    2.50

    Robin van Persie

Came on as sub and rarely has he seen so little of the ball. Never got a chance to influence the game.

  • Petr Cech
    67
    47
    2.50

    Petr Cech

Seemed to kill off Chelsea's hopes by misjudging an early Carrick ball to let Hernandez score. Did redeem himself with a excellent double save to keep out Rooney's shot and then David Luiz's misdirected clearing header.

  • Ashley Cole
    67
    25
    3.00

    Ashley Cole

A willing raider down the left flank. He made the most of the space left by Oscar coming inside but failed to deliver that perfect cross Demba Ba was hunting for. Did produce one sublime pass for Mata that the Spaniard failed to make the most of.

  • César Azpilicueta
    58
    37
    2.50

    César Azpilicueta

Booked for taking Hernandez out off the ball and offered little going forward.

  • David Luiz
    82
    31
    3.00

    David Luiz

Usual mixed bag from the shaggy haired stopper. A reckless lunge on Rafael earns him a booking and then he strides forward and tests De Gea with a dripping shot. As always better when on the ball than when trying to win it back.

  • Gary Cahill
    55
    53
    2.50

    Gary Cahill

Went missing when Hernandez scored the opener and failed to get into the game with United playing one striker. Should have stepped out with the ball more.

  • Frank Lampard
    56
    55
    2.50

    Frank Lampard

Wasted a chance to get Chelsea back into the game when drilling a shot into De Gea's arms following good work from Mata. Subbed to howls of derison when the scoreline was 2-0 to United.

  • Oscar
    82
    37
    2.50

    Oscar

Flitted in and out of the game when used on the left but posed plenty of questions when shifted in behind Ba with 25 minutes left. Looked too lightweight for a rough and tumble of an FA Cup tie.

  • Ramires
    107
    24
    3.00

    Ramires

Lucky to get away with a booking for kicking out at Kawaga. Worked hard to break up play and powered forward before composing himself and banging in Chelsea's second.

  • Victor Moses
    57
    54
    2.50

    Victor Moses

Did get some joy down the right against Evra but was guilty of a glaring miss when blasting well wide from a clever return pass by Mata.

  • Demba Ba
    63
    52
    2.50

    Demba Ba

Showed his frustration in the first half with a pointless long range shot. Was unable to find space in the box with Evans and Ferdinand reading his intentions.

  • Juan Mata
    146
    19
    3.50

    Juan Mata

A class act and Chelsea's most inventive talent. Set up Lampard for a decent chance and teed up Moses to waste another. But continued to make things happen in midfield. Thought he has scored an 89th minute winner only to see de Gea pull off a top class stop.

Substitutions

  • Eden Hazard
    162
    29
    3.00

    Eden Hazard

Brought on to replace Lampard and arrived to a chorus of boos. Turned them to cheers moments later with a goal of pure quality to kick-start Chelsea's revival.

  • John Obi Mikel
    131
    17
    3.50

    John Obi Mikel

His appearance off the bench along with Hazard changed the game. He took control of midfield and was key in the Blues' fightback.

  • Fernando Torres
    90
    58
    2.00

    Fernando Torres

Brought on to sniff out a winner but failed to deliver once more despite being given a clear sight of goal from 18 yards in stoppage time.
