East Bengal became the first Indian club to qualify for the knock-out phase of the AFC Cup remaining unbeaten in the group stage, after defeating Sai Gon Xuan Thanh FC 4-1 at the Salt Lake stadium in Kolkata, on Tuesday.

The Red and Gold also claim home advantage in the round of 16 by virtue of topping the group with 14 points after six matches, while Selangor FA - who beat Tampines Rovers FC in the other match - pipped Sai Gon on second spot to make it through from the group.

Edeh Chidi opened the scoring for the home side, converting an eighth minute penalty, before Andrew Barisic doubled East Bengal's lead at the stroke of half-time. Penn Ikechukwu Orji then scored a brace in a span on six minutes (54', 60') to take the match away from Sai Gon, for whom Christian José Nsi Amougou pulled back a mere consolation in the 62nd minute.

Saudi Arabia-based referee Fahad Almirdasi pointed towards the spot when Edeh Chidi was brought down in the box in the seventh minute, and it was the Nigerian who himself stepped up to convert from the 12 yards mark, to give Morgan's side the early lead.

Both teams were unable to alter the scoreline further for most of the first half, until East Bengal's Australian striker Andrew Barisic made the best of some good build-up play by team-mate Soumik Dey and put the ball in the back of the net in the 45th minute.

The Kolkatan outfit continued to go all out in attack in the second half and were rewarded by a quality cross from the right flank in the 54th minute, as Penn Orji headed the same in at the far post, before nodding in another delivery from Chidi six minutes later.

It was only a defensive error by the group leaders that allowed Christian Amougou to sneak in through the right side and fire a stiff grounder that, on any other day, could have been saved by East Bengal goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu.
