Selangor 2-2 East Bengal: The Red Giants come from behind to draw

Selangor fail to capitalise on Sai Gon's earlier draw to Tampines, and have to win their next match against Tampines, while relying on Sai Gon to be defeated, in order to qualify

Selangor went into the match needing a win in order to secure a qualification spot, especially when they are behind the second-placed team in the group by three points. However, their line-up seemed to point to the idea that they have already thrown in the towel, with the likes of Mahali Jasuli, Amri Yahya and S. Kunalan being put on the bench. In addition to this, their prolific forward Forkey Doe was injured.

East Bengal however had an easier task for the match. They were first in Group H, and needed only one point from the match to secure qualification to the next stage. A win at the Shah Alam Stadium would help them do so, and finish first in the group.

As with the previous AFC Cup match in Shah Alam, rain poured down quite heavily, which meant that the match began rather cautiously for both teams, with the first 15 minutes of the match taking place uneventfully.

The home team made the first concrete attempt in the 18th minute, from a Micheal Kubala drive from 35 metres out. East Bengal goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh was able to keep the ball out.

However, East Bengal's first attempt was more clinical than Selangor's. In the 23rd minute, a sloppy clearance by the Selangor defence put Penn Orji through in their penalty box instead. Orji did well to put the ball between Sharbinee's legs to make it 1-0.

To their credit, the Red Giants did not falter and kept attacking. They were almost rewarded with an instant equaliser in the 26th minute, again from Kubala. He fended off the physical challenges of an East Bengal defender before making a shot towards the goal, but his attempt went over the bar instead.

In the 35th minute, Kubala again did well to send a cross in from the right which found Raimi Nor on the left edge of the box. Raimi then launched the ball towards the goal, which missed the goalkeeper, but also his striker Ramzul Zahini, and the goalmouth.

Immediately after that attempt, Kubala, who had been performing rather well up to that point, had to be taken off for an injury. In came Amri Yahya, his rest prematurely cut short.

Selangor's chances in the competition were further diminished when East Bengal doubled their lead in the 54th minute, following another display of shoddy defending. Laldrika Ralte found himself with the ball after two rebounds following a blocked attempt and a save by Sharbinee. The Selangor keeper couldn't get back into position in time from his save, and Ralte left unmarked to slot the ball into a partially open goal.

However the sending off of Manandeep Singh in the 77th minute for a late challenge breathed life back into Selangor, and the Red Giants instantaneously scored from a brilliant Shukor Jusoh shot from outside the box that sailed into the keeper's top right corner. East Bengal suddenly found themselves under pressure with just 10 minutes to go, and they defended even deeper in their own half.

However, they were made to regret this decision, just before the final whistle was blown, Selangor defender Adib Aizuddin connected well with a free kick taken from the right of the East Bengal box. His low shot from outside the box curled away from the goalkeeper and ended at the back of the net.

However, there was not much time for them to add another goal, especially when Selangor players then inexplicably showed more commitment to celebrating the equaliser than collecting the ball to get the game restarted. The referee blew his whistle soon, and the game ended 2-2.
