East Bengal played out a 0-0 draw against Xuan Thanh FC of Vietnam in an away game of the AFC Cup on Wednesday. This result takes both the teams to 4 points from 2 games, with the same goal difference. However, Xuan Thanh still top the chart, as they have scored more goals than the Kolkata giants.
In the absence of regular centre-back Arnab Mondal, Trevor James Morgan showed his belief in Gurwinder Singh, who started with Uga Okpara at the heart of the defense. First-choice goalkeeper Abhijit Mondal was also rested, giving Gurpreet Singh Sandhu his share of first team action. The Red and Gold coach took the opportunity of fielding 4 foreigners, as he started with Chidi Edeh and Andrew Barisic upfront.
The match started on a defensive note as both the teams were wary of conceding an early goal. The first chance of the match fell to the home team, when Trong Phi found a good opening in the box in the 7th minute. However, no damages were done to the visiting team as his shot went just over the bar. As the game progressed, East Bengal seemed to dominate in the midfield. Penn Orji stole the ball in the 22nd minute and dribbled towards the goal. But his shot was not incisive enough to put Tan Troung, the Xuan Thanh FC goalkeeper into any sort of trouble.
One of the best chances came Xuan’s way, when an unmarked defender Duc Linh had a free header from a corner kick, but his attempt went just past the post. In the remaining minutes before the break, neither of the teams could manage any more dangerous breakthroughs past the opponent's defense. With increasing number of interceptions in the middle of the pitch, the game lost its pace.
In the second half, the hosts came out all guns blazing for the 3 points, but couldn’t break the solid defense of the visitors. The game changed in the last quarter as East Bengal took over the initiative and looked the better side, pushing for a late away goal. For the last few minutes, the coach depended upon the Indian strikers as Baljit Singh and Robin Singh replaced Chidi and Barisic. However, both the teams failed to score the all important goal, forcing them to share the honour.
This draw ends East Bengal’s 10-match losing streak in away matches of the AFC Cup. This is also the first time Trevor Morgan could secure a point in an away match, during his two and a half year tenure at the helm of the club.
