Churchill Brothers played out an entertaining 2-2 draw against Semen Padang in an AFC Cup Group E encounter, at the Balewadi stadium in Pune on Tuesday.

Sunil Chhetri opened the scoring in the 26th minute before goals from Hendra Adi Bayauw and M. Rizal in the 36th and 45th minutes respectively gave the away side the lead. Bikramjit Singh’s second half effort meant that the game ended in a draw. The match was also marred by an injury to Semen Padang’s custodian Jandia Eka Putra, who was knocked unconscious after a challenge by Beto and had to be rushed to the hospital.

The hosts started with Sunil Chhetri upfont, supported by Bineesh Balan and Steven Dias on the wings with Beto just behind him in an attacking midfield position.

Muhammad Nur iskandar started upfront for the Indonesia team while Wahyu Wijiastanto anchored the defense.

It was Churchill Brothers who looked to take the initiative from the start with Steven Dias finding plenty of space down the right wing. However, there was no one at the end of the winger's precise crosses into the box on most occasions.

Sunil Chhetri got the first real opportunity of the game as he was played clean through by Beto. However, Jandia Eka Putra came out swiftly from his goal to smother the chance.

The custodian had to be on his toes again as Beto tried his luck with a chip from outside the box which Putra did well to tip over the bar.

It was clear that the Indonesians were finding it tough to keep the home side at bay and in the 26th minute, Sunil Chhetri finally put his side ahead as he met a cross from Denzil Franco with a thumping header.

The goal forced Semen Padang to finally come out of their shell with Nur Iskandar probing the Churchill defense with his pace and trickery.

The Goans though, were not overly troubled but in the 36th minute, found themselves back on level terms with the visitors as Hendra Adi Bayauw dribbled past a couple of players before shooting at the near post and finding the back of the net. Sandip Nandy might feel a bit disappointed as he was caught flat-footed at his near post.

M. Rizal then made Churchill pay for another bit of sloppy goalkeeping by Nandy in the 45th minute as the custodian collected the ball on the edge of his box and threw it straight at the midfielder, who lobbed the it into the goal from about 35 yards out before wheeling away in celebration.

That proved to be the last bit of action in the half as the referee soon blew the half-time whistle.

The second half started with the hosts in full flight, looking for an equalizer. However, Iskandar, Hendra and Titus John Londouw-Bonai threatened on the counter attack as the Indonesians looked to keep hold of their lead.

All their efforts were undone in the 57th minute, when Bikramjit Singh unleashed a pile-driver from outside the box which the keeper failed to collect properly, allowing the ball to trickle past the goal-line.

The Red Machines though were looking for a win and continued pressing forward in search of a winner.

It was Hendra however who came close to scoring as he was found by a clever pass behind the defense by Vendry Ronaldo Moro. Fortunately for the Indians, Nandy was quick off his line this time around and Hendra’s hurried effort was off-target.

The play was momentarily halted as Beto crashed into Eka Putra who seemed to be knocked unconscious. An ambulance was called onto the pitch and the custodian was immediately rushed to a hospital.

The injury to their keeper had visibly disturbed the Indonesian side and they seemed to recede deeper and deeper into their half.

The initiative thus, was handed firmly to Churchill brothers who should have gone ahead when in the 70th minute, Denzil Franco's cross found Beto. The Brazilian had all the time in the world to control and finish the move but he uncharacteristically lost his composure and fired his shot wide.

In a bid to wrestle back the momentum from the hosts, Semen Padang threw in Nico Malau in place of Nur Iskandar but the Goans continued to monopolize possession.

Ronaldo Moro though, picked out Hendry yet again with a delightful through ball. The winger’s cross into the box however was not of the same quality and was cleared out by Ravanan with ease.

Sanjay Balmunch and Bineesh Balan were replaced in quick succession by Ashley Fernandes and Biswajit Biswas as Mariano Dias decied to roll the dice in a bid to force home a winner.

Substitute keeper Fakhrurrazi was then called upon to make a finger-tip save from Beto’s pile-driver in the 89th minute. The Brazilian unleashed a ferocious shot from outside the box which seemed destined to find the back of the net before the custodian intervened, drawing applause from the rest of his team for his effort.

That proved to be the last real chance of the game, and the draw meant that Churchill Brothers had finally registered their first point in the AFC Cup 2013 campaign, while Semen padang now have 4 points from 2 games.
