Time will tell what the Portugal sensation can achieve, but for today, that just about wraps things up. With speculation out of the way and his future at the club confirmed, Ronaldo's next task will be to get Real Madrid's Champions League campaign off to the best of starts against Galatasaray on Tuesday - and we'll be bringing you live play-by-play action from that game, as well as all the other opening fixtures. Until then, it's hasta luego from the Bernabeu!

18:28 IST

Ronaldo very much looking to the future after today's signing - so what can the 28-year-old accomplish in the next five years, with contract talks now out of the way? Can he break Raul's scoring record? Is La Decima finally on the cards?

18:14 IST

"Madrid is my home," was the theme of today's press conference - and the man himself, beaming to the assembled media here, made that abundantly clear.

18:10 IST

And what of all the talk of "sadness" last season?

"We have our good and bad days. That day, I was a bit sad, something that can happen more times during the season. It's normal and human. Probably I shouldn't have said that in public, but I'm human and I make my own mistakes. It's past though.

"I think last season was positive though. It's something I have worked for, but I think I can always improve and keep learning. I'm an ambitious person and I don't want to set any limit. I'm going to try to score 200 more goals in the next four or five years here. It's not the most important thing, but I'm going to try.

"Leaving Real Madrid was something I could think about, but nothing that let me lose sleep. I wanted to stay at this club, the best in the world in my opinion. If you leave Real Madrid, there is not another destination, because you are already at the top."

18:05 IST

And that brings proceedings to an end at Santiago Bernabeu: a further five years at a colossal salary, but Ronaldo insists the money is not the most important thing...

"Being the best paid in the world was not the main thing. There are many things more important that just money. I'm not going to lie to you: it's important, but not the priority.

"There is a winning project, being at the best team in the world, the one that signs the best players... This club has enough size to win more Champions Leagues, more Ligas, more Copas... That's why I feel so much a part of this club. Money was not a big deal. Being the first one, the second one or the third one is not important, because I feel great."

17:59 IST

And lastly from Ronaldo - what of the summer talk of a return to Manchester United?

"I will be honest with you. Everyone knows I was in Manchester for six years, they gave me many things, and I don't forget that.

"But Manchester is the past, now it's Madrid. This is my home, my family's here, I'm really happy here.

"I respect the clubs who knocked on the door to ask about me, but they always knew my only goal was to be here and to play at this club, maybe until the end of my career.

"Nobody knows the future, but I'm going to be here for five more years and I just want to win trophies for this club. I try to do my best, like always."

17:55 IST

Raul's goal record for the club stands at 323 - does Ronaldo feel he can reach it during his remaining Madrid career?

"Records are there to be broken. It's not the most important thing. The most important thing is to win trophies."

Over potentially five years, it'd take a brave man to bet against him...

17:53 IST

This is what Florentino Perez had to say in full:

"We finally got what every supporter wanted. Four years ago this stadium was crowded; there was no match though. We unveiled a fantastic player, like we never had done before. That day people received Cristiano Ronaldo.

"He has proved a great talent that has conquered the heart of every 'madridista'. His features are overwhelming: 203 goals in 203 games with Real Madrid. There are no preceding numbers like those.

"But Cristiano is looking for new challenges now. You still have many goals to score; many titles to celebrate. Santiago Bernabeu taught us this club has always to have the best players... And we have the best one.

"Those who watched [Alfredo] Di Stefano playing, we see now in Cristiano that great dynasty. Today is a wonderful day for Real Madrid and every supporter, because the best player knows this will be his home forever. These supporters are the most demanding ones, but also the ones who love him the most. Cristiano is and will keep being 'madridista' forever."

17:49 IST

Florentino Perez described today's renewal as important for "the world's best player and the world's greatest club." What does the man himself think about that?

"It's positive. It's something that I have had to work hard to become.

"I've scored more than 200 goals in four years, but that is not the most important thing, as I've said before."

17:47 IST

"It's not about money. The team is the most important. I want to contribute to the future project of this club, to continue winning titles, leagues, trophies.

"At the moment, I feel good, I want to continue at this club for many years."

17:43 IST

"I want to show my love for the club in the way I am, the way I contribute to things on the pitch. I want to thank the fans, the president, my team-mates, the directors - they made the decision easy for me."

17:41 IST

"I feel really happy. I've had four years here, and for me, it's essential to feel happy," Ronaldo continues.

"In effect, we had an agreement at the end of the season. It's what I always wanted, it's the same for the president."

17:39 IST

"It's a privilege to continue playing here," says Ronaldo. "I'm very happy, I will continue to give my all for this shirt.

"I'm extremely happy to extend my stay."

17:33 IST

And Florentino Perez takes to the stand...

"Cristiano Ronaldo will continue as a Real Madrid player for the next five years," he confirms.

17:30 IST

No real surprise that goals against Barcelona are being given slow-motio special place in this montage. Which is still going, by the way.

17:28 IST

Back in the special stage room at the Bernabeu, we're now being treated to a Ronaldo montage, all to the sound of 'Simply the Best'.

So... Gareth who?

17:26 IST

So Ronaldo has finally drawn speculation over his immediate future to a close, but it seems you fine folk don't believe this is Real Madrid's best piece of summer business: in today's Poll of the Day, the signing of Isco is currently leading the way in that category, ahead of Ronnie's renewal, Bale's big-budget arrival and Ancelotti's appointment...

17:23 IST

Ronaldo, after embracing Perez, has been presented with a small personal trophy to mark the occasion before standing in front of the club's Champions League trophies to pose for photographs. No doubt Perez is confident this could be the last piece of the Decima puzzle..

17:21 IST

The man himself has just entered the room and shaken hands with Florentino Perez. Complete with respectable-looking spectacles, he puts pen to paper on the document under his nose.

17:11 IST

Just about five minutes to go until we get underway in Madrid...
